Hashomer Hatzair USA is seeking a Development Manager to work 20 hours/week to strengthen the work of our professional staff, Fundraising Committee and other Board members by coordinating and executing tasks related to fundraising. The Development Manager will report to the Camp Director and the Fundraising Committee and will work with the Endowment Committee and other Board members.

The Development Manager is a vital leadership position that serves as the key fundraiser for Hashomer Hatzair USA and Camp Shomria. The person who takes on this role will be expected to work with our professional staff and Fundraising and Endowment Committees to implement our fundraising plan and to employ best practices and innovative approaches to increase philanthropic support for our organization. The Development Manager will meet with and cultivate donors, helping to foster relationships. In future years, the Development Manager will be instrumental in developing as well as implementing the fundraising plan. We are raising money from institutional and private sources to support capital projects, general operations and scholarships. One key project in 2022-2023 will involve working with professional staff and the Board on activities related to celebrating our 100th anniversary in the United States.  

Essential Functions

  • Solicit or manage the solicitation of all current major gift donors and prospects. 
  • Develop strategies to expand, enhance and cultivate the current donor base, including writing grant applications. 
  • Work with professional staff and lay leaders to implement the Board's fundraising plan.
  • Partner with the Board to plan and support relevant committee meetings (particularly the Fundraising and Endowment Committees) and provide direct assistance to appropriate Board and staff members with respect to fundraising activities, marketing, special events, and alumni engagement.
  • Serve as an integral part of the leadership of the Hashomer Hatzair USA team, playing an active, visible role.

Development Planning and Relationship Management

  • Identify potential donors, and develop strategies for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship for donors (individuals, organizations, and foundations)
  • Collaborate on the planning, organization, and implementation of fundraising activities and special events – including annual giving and capital campaigns, meetings, stakeholder events, direct mail, cultivation visits, solicitation visits, etc. 
  • Maintain and build existing foundation and community partner relationships and identify new opportunities for partnership and/or support. 
  • Assist with the recruitment, training, and coordination of volunteers focused on development activities.
  • Collaborate with various lay leaders to plan events and engage alumni throughout the year.

Development Operations 

  • Ensure the maintenance of our donor database and accurate donor records, donor communication, and other related areas.
  • Generate pledge reminders and all needed reports for donors, committees, foundations, etc. and provide regular reports on fundraising activities to the Board and professional staff, in cooperation with the Fundraising Committee.
  • Write, edit and/or submit grant proposals and reports, as needed.
  • Work in collaboration with the professional staff and the Board to write and prepare materials needed for development-related communications, including newsletters, e-mails, appeals, campaign materials, and website.

  • Quickly learns new processes and procedures

Familiarity with Judaism, the Jewish community and Israel and a love of Jewish camping are highly desirable. 
Significant understanding of the impact and unique value of a camp environment is strongly preferred.
Fundraising experience, especially with a non-profit, is also preferred.
Knowledge of Hebrew is a plus.


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of proven experience and skills within community relations, growth, fundraising, and/or development with comfort and success as a frontline solicitor.
  • Experience soliciting Major Gifts and identifying and cultivating new major gift prospects.
  • Advanced CRM software skills, Little Green Light is a plus.
  • Must be able to be present for meetings with donors throughout the year.   
  • May need to travel to Camp Shomria and visit with donors during the summer.
  • Position includes some weekend and evening work and travel.
  • Participation in professional development programs, including annual conferences and gatherings, is expected. 

Compensation/Salary Package

  • $35,000-$40,000 a year for part time work (20 hours/week)
  • 8 vacation days per year, for a year that commences on the start date
  • Can work remotely or in an office, depending on personal preference, although some meetings will need to be in person
