Position Overview

Mishkan Torah seeks a warm, organized, and visionary Part-Time Hebrew School Director to guide and grow our small but vibrant religious school serving young families in Prince George’s County. This role is ideal for an educator who believes in relationship-centered Jewish learning, low-barrier engagement, and building a joyful, intergenerational community.

The Director will oversee curriculum, faculty support, family engagement, and program coordination for our playgroup, Torah for Tots, and K–2 Sunday religious school, with the expectation of adding grades as our first cohort matures.

Key Responsibilities

Educational Leadership

• Develop and refine a developmentally appropriate, values-driven curriculum for K–2 (and future grades).
• Support and mentor volunteer teachers; provide lesson plans, materials, and coaching.
• Ensure alignment with Mishkan Torah’s educational philosophy emphasizing joy, belonging, and foundational Jewish literacy.
• Teach one class a week

 Program Management

• Oversee weekly Sunday religious school operations (attendance, materials, classroom setup).
• Support monthly Torah for Tots and weekly playgroup programming.
• Manage the school calendar, communications, and registration processes.
• Maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all families.

Family & Community Engagement

• Build relationships with parents and caregivers; serve as a warm, accessible point of contact.
• Partner with the Children’s Education Committee to strengthen the pipeline from playgroup → Torah for Tots → K–2 → future grades.
• Collaborate on three annual family outreach events (Chanukah, Purim, Lag B’Omer).
• Support intergenerational programming, including family Shabbat dinners and community holiday celebrations.

Administration

• Work with synagogue leadership on budgeting, staffing, and program evaluation.
• Track attendance, enrollment, and family engagement metrics.
• Provide monthly updates to the Rabbi and Children’s Education Committee.
• Assist with recruitment of volunteer teachers and teen helpers.

Qualifications

• Experience in Jewish education (formal or informal), early childhood, or elementary teaching.
• Strong interpersonal skills and a warm, welcoming presence with children and families.
• Ability to design curriculum and support volunteers with varying levels of experience.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Comfort working in a small-synagogue environment where collaboration and flexibility are essential.
• Familiarity with inclusive, pluralistic Jewish practice.

Preferred Qualifications

• Background in experiential or intergenerational Jewish learning.
• Experience growing small programs or building new initiatives.
• Ability to integrate music, movement, or creative arts into learning.
• Familiarity with Prince George’s County Jewish community (or willingness to learn quickly).

• If enrollment or overall program growth occurs during your tenure as Director of Education, there may be opportunities for a pay increase and/or additional hours at your established hourly rate, based on organizational needs and performance.
