Position Summary

Congregation Dor Tamid seeks a Director of Engagement who is first and foremost a people person: someone who loves being in community, builds trust naturally, and understands that Jewish engagement begins with listening.

This full-time professional will serve as a relational hub of the congregation: cultivating connections, creating welcoming pathways into Jewish life, and helping members feel seen, valued, and at home. The Director will work closely with the Rabbi, professional staff, and lay leaders to shape programming that reflects Dor Tamid’s soul: thoughtful, inclusive, emotionally grounded, and accessible.

This role is ideal for someone who believes that the most meaningful moments in synagogue life often happen between the programs, and who is energized by building community through genuine presence.

Core Responsibilities

Relational Engagement & Community Presence

  • Build and sustain meaningful, personal relationships with, and among, congregants across all life stages.
  • Serve as a welcoming and familiar presence at services, programs, lifecycle moments, and informal gatherings.
  • Engage new members and prospective members with warmth, curiosity, and follow-through, helping them find their place in the community.
  • Notice who is present, who is absent, and who may need outreach—working collaboratively with the rabbi and staff to ensure no one is overlooked.
  • Create a program for volunteer engagement and empowerment.

Programming with Heart

  • Design new, and support existing, programs that reflect Dor Tamid’s values: connection, learning, joy, reflection, and community care.
  • Plan and implement:
    • Adult and intergenerational learning opportunities
    • Shabbat- and holiday-adjacent experiences that feel welcoming and accessible
    • Social and cultural programs that build relationships, not just attendance
  • Collaborate with rabbi to ensure programs align with the rhythm of the Jewish calendar and the emotional life of the congregation.
  • Support lay-led initiatives and empower congregants to bring their passions and ideas into synagogue life.

Culture Building & Inclusion

  • Help cultivate a synagogue culture where people feel comfortable showing up as their full selves.
  • Foster an environment of inclusion for all of our congregants, including, but not limited to interfaith families, Jews-by-choice, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those at varying levels of Jewish knowledge and practice.
  • Model Dor Tamid’s ethos of kindness, respect, and mutual responsibility in all interactions.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Work with staff to communicate programs in a way that feels personal, inviting, and reflective of Dor Tamid’s voice.
  • Partner closely with the rabbi and colleagues as a collaborative, flexible team member.
  • Provide thoughtful feedback and insight about congregational engagement trends and needs.

Administrative & Organizational Support

  • Manage logistics for programs, including scheduling, registration, and coordination with volunteers and vendors.
  • Track participation and engagement in ways that support relationship-building rather than metrics alone.
  • Perform other duties as needed to support the life and health of the congregation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Experience in synagogue, Jewish communal work, or relationship-centered nonprofit engagement strongly preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence; ability to connect authentically with people of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Organized and reliable, with the ability to manage multiple priorities while remaining people-centered.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficient in social-media.
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and Jewish holidays as part of synagogue life.
  • A genuine love for Reform Jewish community and an understanding that engagement is sacred work.
