Bookkeeper

The Bookkeeper is a part-time employee who manages the synagogue’s financial records, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely reporting. S/he will handle day-to-day bookkeeping tasks, coordinate payroll administration, and support budgeting and financial analysis to enable informed decision-making and responsible stewardship of resources.

Reports to: Executive Director

Position Type: Part-Time

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts; record daily financial transactions with accurate coding.
  • Process accounts payable and accounts receivable; code invoices, issue payments, and reconcile vendor statements.
  • Manage payroll coordination with external provider; ensure accurate payroll processing, tax withholdings, and benefit deductions.
  • Reconcile bank and credit card statements; assist with monthly close and contribute to the preparation of financial statements.
  • Track donations, membership dues, program fees, and other revenues; generate donor receipts and assist with reporting.
  • Monitor cash flow; manage petty cash and banking relationships; prepare cash receipt journals.
  • Maintain internal controls and assist with audits, sales tax refunds, and compliance projects as needed.
  • Assist with budget monitoring; provide variance analyses and financial data to leadership.
  • Produce straightforward financial reports and ad-hoc analyses for clergy, staff, and committees.
  • Collaborate with Executive Director, Finance Committee, and program staff to align financial processes with organizational needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the finance function.

 

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in accounting or bookkeeping coursework, or 5+ years of relevant bookkeeping experience; nonprofit or religious organization experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online and strong Excel/Sheets skills; familiarity with nonprofit databases (e.g., ShulCloud, Salesforce) a plus.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and time-management; ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong communication and confidentiality; able to collaborate effectively with staff, clergy, volunteers, and vendors.
  • Availability to work part-time hours scheduled in coordination with the Executive Director; occasional evenings or weekends may be required around events or closing periods.

Time and Attendance:

  • Part-Time: 15 – 25 hours a week depending on the season, to be determined in collaboration with the Executive Director
  • Limited in-office hours (mostly remote)
  • TBO is closed for most Federal Holidays, Jewish Holidays (Reform Custom), Christmas – New Years, and other dates to be determined.

Compensation and Benefits

This position offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and aligned with our organization’s compensation framework.  The salary range for this position is $26 - $32/hour.
