Executive Director of The Open Temple

 

Position Summary

Executive Director (ED) of an emerging Jewish community in Venice, CA.  The ED will work with the Founding Rabbi, the Board, and team to manage the operational and developmental framework of Open Temple. Experience in organizational infrastructure, implementation of strategic plan and “big picture”/development will benefit the ideal candidate in this fast-paced, creative and fun start-up.  

 

Ideal capabilities:

Leadership, preferably MBA or experience equivalent. Strategic. Knowledgeable in Jewish-phere. Seeking to answer the question: "What does innovative Jewish community look like in the 21st Century?" Arts or Innovation background a plus.

 

Proficiency in Quickbooks and Salesforce, Wordpress, Monday.com and the Google suite, Later.com, Zapier, and ChatGPT with a curiosity about how technology streamlines operations. 


Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Internal Operations and Management
    1. Weekly meetings with bookkeeper 
    2. Facilitate staff meetings
    3. Coordinate and participate in executive meetings with the Rabbi and Board Chair and implement action items 
    4. Delegate tasks to appropriate staff
    5. Annual calendaring and coordination of calendar with creation of annual budget 
    6. Implement systems to support efficient day-to-day operations at Open Temple. This includes systems to:
      1. Establish regular/consistent/predictable marketing timelines in coordination with marketing team 
      2. Create annual board calendar and attends meetings when required 
      3. Oversee all banking, stock and brokerage accounts and liaise with bookkeeper 
  2. Project management: 
    1. Manage procedures for monitoring staff progress on projects
    2. Website development: work closely with webmaster and marketing team in launching and sustaining new website 
    3. Oversee social media and marketing schedule and coordinate with marketing team members 
  3. Human Resources
    1. Implement human resources policies, procedures, and practices from the Open Temple Employee Handbook
    2. Craft job descriptions and lead hiring processes
    3. Oversee custodians, repair people, and other contractors who address physical needs of the OT house
    4. Ensure that all new staff and contractors receive an appropriate orientation to the organization and appropriate training in accordance with Open Temple’s mission 
    5. Organize and oversee daily/weekly/monthly updates on Monday.com and coordinates with team at weekly staff meetings
    6. Facilitate and takes notes during staff meetings
  4. Membership
    1. Manage a system for tracking community member engagement
    2. With Director of Development, execute strategy to increase the number of paying co-creators in the OT community  
    3. Oversee Co-Creator registration and renewal processes
    4. Establish payment plans 
    5. Follow up with pledged donations, collection of outstanding invoices
  5. Development/Fundraising
    1. Works closely with Director of Development to advance Open Temple’s effort to secure a 33/33/33 funding model
    2. Work with Director of Development to meet annual goals for fundraising
    3. Compose,  with accuracy and culture of gratitude, annual tax donation letters in coordination with bookkeeper
    4. Work with team on annual fundraisers and gala 
    5. Bring entrepreneurial spirit into devising new earned revenue opportunities
  6. Happenings 
    1. Leadership presence at weekly and monthly as well as annual happenings 
    2. Work with team and Producers for Shabbat Take Me Higher, Shabbat Dinners and Annual High Holidays
  7. Board Development
    1. Works closely with Engagement Director on cultivating new Board Officers
    2. Works closely with Rabbi and Board Chair to prepare agendas and budgets for board meetings
    3. Disseminates notes and oversees action items and follow up for Board Meetings 
    4. Supports Board in their engagement responsibilities as well as assists in goal setting
  8. Uphold and practice with mindfulness Open Temple values of Creativity, Love and Joyous Judaism

Salary:  90k/year or competitive / commensurate with experience
