DHJC Full-Time Cantor position

Dix Hills Jewish Center (DHJC), a 550+ member Conservative Synagogue, celebrating over 50 years as a beacon of dynamic Judaism in Dix Hills and Western Suffolk County, is seeking a full-time Cantor to join our Synagogue. We are a traditional egalitarian synagogue committed to the reality that all are full partners in the beauty of Jewish life and that all Jews are given an equal role in all rituals. The Dix Hills Jewish Center is an engaging, vibrant congregation dedicated to serving the Jewish community of Western Suffolk County. We are excited about the growth in our synagogue, and the wonderful growth of the Jewish community of Dix Hills, Commack and the neighboring communities. We are a community committed to learning, to supporting each other, and to being a warm and welcoming place for all who participate.

We are seeking a full time Cantor to partner with our wonderful Rabbi, uplifting the congregation with a spirited presence, a passion for teaching, and dedication to community. In this role, the Cantor will partner closely with the Rabbi and professional staff to continue to strengthen and build our DHJC family.

Key responsibilities to include:

Ritual Leadership

  • Leading services at Kabbalat Shabbat, Shabbat morning services, Shabbat Mincha/Maariv/Havdalah services, Festivals and High Holidays, and daily minyanim.
  • Partner closely with the Rabbi to cover lifecycle events and in every aspect of the synagogue
  • Enhance Friday night, Shabbat morning and Havdalah services with traditional and modern melodies, bringing uplifting inspiration to the congregation.

Educational role

  • Teach engaging Jewish music in our vibrant Early Childhood Academy of over 110 students
  • Teach Tefillot in our thriving Religious School with 140 students
  • Oversee Bnai Mitzvah program
    • Work closely with Bnai Mitzvah tutors, meeting monthly to review student progress
    • Study Tefillot with Bnai Mitzvah students as they approach their celebratory date
    • Support families as they journey through the Bnai Mitzvah process
  • Develop, plan and implement adult education formats that will continue to inspire our community of learners
  • Lead and continue to grow our youth and adult choirs, bringing musical inspiration to the community.

Pastoral responsibilities

  • Work closely with our Rabbi to provide warmth, care and support to our community in times of need and celebration

Leadership role

  • Actively collaborate with professional staff and lay leaders to develop and implement the synagogue’s plan for growth
  • Attend executive committee and Board of Trustees meetings
  • Be a mentor and paradigm of the values of Conservative Judaism

The ideal candidate will bring the following:

  • Deep knowledge of liturgy and nusach, both traditional and contemporary
  • Excellent musical and vocal skills
  • Warm, engaging approach to the community, ability to connect with all ages
  • A joy for teaching learners of all ages
  • Professional commitment, passion and dedication for the calling of a Hazzan
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate well with staff, lay leaders and the community

Compensation package includes:

Salary range: $120,000 - $140,000+

Parsonage: A beautiful four-bedroom home for the Cantor is located across the street from the synagogue.

Additional benefits: Parsonage eligibility, health insurance subsidy, retirement contributions, Social Security reimbursement, professional development allowance
