About Congregation Or Shalom Congregation Or Shalom is a Reform temple where music is at the heart of our community. We are an extraordinarily warm and welcoming congregation, and our adult choir plays a central role in creating meaningful, spiritually rich worship.
Position Summary Congregation Or Shalom seeks a skilled and warm Choir Director to lead our adult SATB choir of approximately 25 non professional singers. This position focuses on preparing and conducting the choir for High Holy Day services, with the potential for one additional special "Broadway" musical program during the year.
The Choir Director works collaboratively with the Cantor and professional pianist and is supported by a dedicated volunteer choir secretary who assists with communication and rehearsal logistics.
Primary Responsibilities
Conduct choir for High Holy Day services on the following dates:
Friday, September 11, 6:00–9:30 PM
Saturday, September 12, 9:00 AM–2:30 PM
Sunday, September 20, 6:00–9:30 PM
Monday, September 21, 9:00 AM–2:30 PM
Lead eight consecutive rehearsals, two hours each, beginning the week of July 14
Direct choir and Cantor during services in collaboration with the pianist
Collaborate with the Cantor and pianist to ensure cohesive musical offerings
Foster a warm, inclusive, and supportive rehearsal environment
Ideally prepare and direct one additional program on February 19 or February 26, with five rehearsals in January and February. This program is compensated separately
Qualifications
Experience directing adult SATB choirs, preferably non professional ensembles
Strong conducting and sight reading skills
Ability to teach, motivate, and engage singers with varying levels of experience
Collaborative and flexible working style
Hebrew language knowledge is helpful but not required
Compensation Competitive, stipend based, and commensurate with experience.
