Position Overview

The Jews of Color (JoC) Outreach Coordinator is responsible for deepening Congregation Or Ami’s commitment to creating a welcoming, inclusive, and spiritually nourishing environment for Jews of Color and their families. This position, funded through a dedicated grant, supports community engagement, education, institutional transformation, and partnership-building, with the goal of fostering belonging for Jews of Color both within and beyond the synagogue.

Core Responsibilities and Priorities

1. Community Engagement & Programming

  • Design and lead 2-3 programs through June 2026 that are by and for Jews of Color and JoC families, welcoming both partners (members) and those unaffiliated with the synagogue, reviewed with and approved by the Senior Rabbi.
  • Recruit up to 3 JoC households with school-age children to receive complimentary 2-year synagogue partnerships (“memberships”) and serve as a welcoming contact point for them (1 partner already recruited).
  • Host a major speaker or panel at Congregation Or Ami that highlights the voices and leadership of Jews of Color in the broader Jewish community.
  • Collaborate with Mosaic (inclusion) Committee.

2. Institutional Education & Culture Change

  • Facilitate 1 internal educational session each for: (1) clergy and staff, (2) faculty, (3) synagogue leadership/board and (4) Mosaic (Inclusion) Committee, focusing on next steps how to build/deepen a culture of belonging for JoC and their families in a synagogue/religious school setting.

3. Community Partnership Development

  • Build and maintain active partnerships with 2-5 community-based JoC organizations, fostering collaboration and extending the reach of Congregation Or Ami’s commitment to inclusion.
  • Devote no more than 2 hours per week to this partnership work, ensuring balance with other core responsibilities. Timeline: Ongoing

4. Communication & Reporting

  • Write a 500-word article every other month for Congregation Or Ami’s e-newsletter to highlight the work of JoC outreach and celebrate community voices and events.
  • Track attendance and participation at all programs, sessions, and events, and evaluate impact through tools such as surveys, reflection forms, or interviews.
  • Participate in regular check-ins with the Senior Rabbi to review progress and plan next steps, weekly the first month.

Onsite Expectations

  • Be onsite at Congregation Or Ami every Wednesday, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
  • Maintain focus on primary grant-related projects. Tasks unrelated to grant objectives (e.g., setting up the sanctuary or greeting for unrelated services) and most Shabbat service attendance, while appreciated, are outside the scope of this grant-funded position.
  • Purchases must be approved in advance by Senior Rabbi or his designee

Compensation

  • $29-35/hour for 10-12 hours per week
  • Funded through a designated grant for the duration of the 2025–2026 program year
