For more than 60 years, Tikvat Israel Congregation has been a home for prayer, music, learning and community in Rockville, Maryland. We seek a Shaliach Tzibbur who will partner with our clergy, staff, and lay leaders to bring these values to life, strengthening our multigenerational community through worship, learning, music, and engagement.
Position Overview
The High Holiday and Yom Tov Shaliach Tzibbur will guide Tikvat Israel’s worship to encourage congregational engagement. The ideal candidate will bring musical and liturgical fluency, combining traditional nusach and melodies designed for congregational participation.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead High Holiday and Yom Tov services, as well as occasional Friday night or Shabbat morning services with our Rabbi and lay leaders to create participatory, spiritually rich, and musically engaging worship.
- Blend traditional musical modes (nusach) and contemporary approaches, integrating creativity while maintaining liturgical integrity.
- Collaborate on musical initiatives and guest-artist programs that enhance the synagogue’s musical life.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Musical/Prayer Fluency: Strong knowledge of nusach, contemporary melodies, trope, Hebrew, and Jewish liturgy; vocal and musical competence for participatory worship.
- Collaboration: Ability to work effectively with clergy, staff, and volunteers; strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment: Demonstrated dedication to inclusivity, accessibility, and community engagement.
- Ordination or Commissioning (optional): Rabbinic or Cantorial ordination from an accredited institution (Conservative preferred: pluralistic backgrounds welcome).
NOTE: A Candidate with the necessary skills and knowledge to serve as our Education and Family Engagement Associate may apply simultaneously for both positions.
