Senior Jewish Educator

Overview 

The Senior Jewish Educator plays a key role in fostering Jewish identity and values at Capital Camps, the community Jewish overnight camp serving the Greater Washington and Baltimore regions. This individual is responsible for designing and leading engaging Judaic programs, mentoring staff, and ensuring Jewish education is integrated into the camp experience in a meaningful and accessible way. This position includes pre-camp planning responsibilities and on-site leadership during the summer (June 12 – August 9). 

Senior Jewish Educator Responsibilities 

Pre-Camp (March–June, ~8 hours/month) 

• Collaborate with the Camp Director and Programs Manager to design Judaic programs curriculum. 

• Work with Camp Director in designing reimagined Torah learning curriculum as part of FJC Scaling Impact grant 

• Work with the Art and Outdoor Adventure coordinators to develop "take-home" projects. 

• Compile and create Jewish educational resources for staff. 

• Contact parents of campers requesting Bar/Bat Mitzvah practice during the summer. 

• Design pre-camp and ongoing staff education on Jewish values, prayers, and traditions. 

• Develop Tisha B'Av programming and plan material purchases. 

• Integrate Jewish framing into staff development programs (e.g., leadership, communication). 

Camp Session (June 12 – August 9) 

Shabbat & Holiday Programming 

• Develop and support our camper-involved Shabbat services. 

• Lead diverse Shabbat enrichment activities (e.g., challah baking, village shabbat prep, nature walks). 

• Design and implement Tisha B'Av programming. 

• Ensure all staff are familiar with key camp prayers (Birkat Hamazon, Modeh Ani, Hashkiveinu). 

Jewish Education & Programming 

• Develop and lead 3-4 Judaic programs for each of our camper age groups. 

• Work with staff to educate campers about their bunk names and significance. 

• Facilitate the creation of at least one Jewish-themed take-home project per camper. 

• Oversee and provide Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutoring. 

• Support Cornerstone Fellows in completing their Judaic projects. 

• Infuse Jewish education into nature and campout programs. 

• Mentor staff in integrating Jewish values into their work and personal growth. 

Staff & Community Engagement 

• Provide Jewish framing for staff development workshops. 

• Organize and maintain the Jewish Life resource hub. 

• Document Judaic programs and memorable Jewish moments at camp.

Leadership Team Responsibilities 

Camper & Staff Supervision 

• Mentor and supervise college-aged counselors and specialists. 

• Understand and support campers and staff social, physical, and emotional needs. 

• Lead staff development sessions before and during the summer. 

• Provide constructive feedback and coaching using the e21 mentoring tool. 

• Model and uphold high behavioral and professional standards. 

Programming 

• Develop and oversee special events and evening programs. 

• Work closely with the Program Team to ensure smooth execution of daily schedules. 

• Serve as a senior staff presence at all major camp programs (e.g., meals, Shabbat services). 

General Leadership 

• Participate in Leadership Team meetings. 

• Take on rotating leadership duties (e.g., meals, evening supervision). 

• Communicate camp highlights to families via newsletters. 

Compensation 

Salary range of $8,000 - $10,000
