Description

Congregation Brith Shalom in Bellaire, Texas, is seeking an Assistant Rabbi. The Assistant Rabbi serves as a spiritual leader, educator, teacher, and pastoral presence. They also play a central role in congregational life by leading worship, officiating at lifecycle events, supporting congregational committees, and representing the congregation within the greater Houston Jewish community. This position reports to the Senior Rabbi and the President.

Responsibilities

Teaching and Education

  • Teach Torah and tefillah across age groups
  • Lead workshops and classes in the Religious School
  • Teach adult education courses and conversion program
  • Engage teens in weekly Kehillah High classes

Worship Leadership

  • Lead Shabbat and holiday prayer services
  • Prepare and coordinate rituals to ensure meaningful and engaging worship experiences
  • Oversee and support congregational participation in services

Bnei Mitzvah Program Leadership

  • Meet regularly with Bnei Mitzvah students to track progress and provide mentorship
  • Coordinate with tutors, teachers, and families to support student learning and preparation
  • Organize orientations and workshops for parents and students

Officiating Lifecycle Events

  • Meet with congregants to provide pastoral guidance and preparation for ceremonies
  • Prepare lifecycle events in accordance with Jewish tradition and congregational custom
  • Officiate at weddings, funerals, baby namings, Bnei Mitzvah, and other milestone events

Pastoral Care

  • Visit members in hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, and homes
  • Provide spiritual counseling, support, and comfort to members in times of need

Executive Leadership

  • Attend board meetings
  • Participate as a member of the senior staff leadership team
  • Partner with committee chairs to advance congregational initiatives
  • Serve as a clergy resource, offering Jewish guidance and perspective

Community Engagement

  • Participate in the Houston Rabbinical Association
  • Represent the congregation at community forums and interfaith gatherings
  • Offer divrei Torah at community events and organizational meetings

Qualifications

  • Rabbinic ordination
  • Strong skills in worship leadership, pastoral care, and Jewish education
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with staff, lay leaders, and community partners
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive, welcoming, and vibrant Jewish community
