Executive Director

Location: West Orange, NJ
Position: Full-Time, on-site

B’nai Shalom, a warm and welcoming 200-family Conservative Jewish synagogue, seeks a dynamic, highly organized, and relationship-focused Executive Director to manage the synagogue’s daily operations and support its continued growth. This highly visible leadership role serves as the primary liaison among congregants, clergy, staff, lay leaders, vendors, tenants, and community partners.

The ideal candidate is a detailed oriented, proactive self-starter with the ability to expand beyond conventional solutions and manage multiple projects simultaneously. They will work closely with the Board President, Vice President of Administration, Vice President of Finance, clergy, and lay leadership to ensure effective operations, financial stewardship, member engagement, and outstanding membership services.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Administration

  • Oversee daily synagogue operations, office management, membership administration, website, calendar, and facility scheduling.
  • Support and collaborate with clergy, board members, committees, and volunteers.
  • Manage vendors, office systems, building maintenance, and tenant relationships.
  • Plan and execute logistics for holidays, events, and programming, including scheduling, registration, set-up, materials, communications, and follow-up.

 

Communications & Membership

  • Maintain the membership database and synagogue communications.
  • Produce and distribute email announcements, newsletters, and event materials.
  • Foster member engagement, retention, recruitment, and exceptional customer service.

Finance & Development

  • Partner with the Treasurer, Finance Committee, and bookkeeper to manage the annual operating budget, financial reporting, and long term fiscal health.
  • Monitor expenses, approve operational expenditures, and oversee vendor contracts.
  • Support fundraising initiatives, donor stewardship, and grant opportunities.
  • Identify opportunities for operational efficiencies and revenue enhancement.

Facilities, Security & Technology

  • Coordinate building security with contractors and local law enforcement.
  • Maintain and improve technology systems, website and digital communications, and security procedures and preparedness.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between tenants and the synagogue, responding promptly to concerns, coordinating building needs, and fostering positive, long-term relationships.
  • Oversee all aspects of the synagogue's tenant relationships, including administration of existing leases, monitoring lease compliance, coordinating renewals, and maintaining accurate lease documentation.
  • Oversee the maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and appearance of the synagogue campus.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Leadership experience in a synagogue, nonprofit, religious, or community organization.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong financial and project management abilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and video conferencing platforms.
  • Experience with ShulCloud, social media, and website administration is preferred.
  • Knowledge of lease administration, property management, or commercial tenant relations is highly desirable.
  • Some evenings, weekends, and Jewish holiday work, required.

Compensation

  • Salary: $100,000–$115,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
