Beth Israel Congregation is seeking a full-time Director of Synagogue Operations to coordinate the administrative, financial, logistical, membership, and facilities needs of our Conservative synagogue community in Owings Mills, Maryland.

This is a hands-on role for someone who is organized, dependable, service-oriented, and comfortable working in a small-staff, volunteer-supported synagogue environment. The role’s primary focus areas are financial administration, synagogue logistics, membership support, and operational follow-through.

Beth Israel is a relationship-driven community that brings people together through Jewish tradition, lifelong learning, meaningful prayer, community connection, and acts of loving kindness. We are looking for someone who enjoys synagogue life, understands the rhythm of the Jewish calendar, works well with people, manages details effectively, and helps keep the congregation running smoothly.

What You’ll Do

The Director of Synagogue Operations will:

  • Coordinate day-to-day synagogue operations, office workflows, calendars, procedures, records, and administrative follow-through.
  • Supervise administrative and facilities staff, helping ensure clear responsibilities, coverage, deadlines, and accountability.
  • Support clergy, staff, volunteers, committees, and lay leaders in carrying out programs, services, holidays, lifecycle events, and community activities.
  • Coordinate logistics for synagogue events, including room setup, staffing, communications, supplies, security, technology, vendors, and building needs.
  • Serve as a helpful and responsive point of contact for members, prospective members, guests, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Support membership experience, congregational communications, and volunteer engagement in partnership with staff and lay leaders.
  • Coordinate building logistics, maintenance needs, vendors, rentals, security procedures, access systems, and other operational needs.
  • Assist with administrative and financial processes, including billing support, member accounts, donations, rentals, payables, deposits, payroll coordination, and documentation.
  • Help prepare basic budgets for programs, events, rentals, holidays, and other activities; track expenses against approved budgets; and flag questions or variances to the appropriate lay leaders.
  • Use and help maintain synagogue systems such as ShulCloud, Constant Contact, Zoom, livestream-related tools, access-control/security systems, and office software.
  • Help create practical systems and processes that keep the synagogue organized, efficient, and running smoothly.

The Director reports to the Board of Directors and works closely with the Rabbi, President, officers, committee chairs, staff, volunteers, and lay leaders.

What We’re Looking For

Strong candidates will bring many of the following:

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Strong follow-through and attention to detail.
  • Comfort managing multiple priorities in a small-staff environment.
  • Experience supervising staff, coordinating projects, or managing operational workflows.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a service-oriented approach.
  • Comfort with technology and willingness to learn new systems.
  • Sound judgment, discretion, professionalism, and reliability.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with clergy, staff, volunteers, members, vendors, committees, and lay leaders.
  • Familiarity with synagogue life, Jewish traditions, holidays, lifecycle events, and the rhythm of the Jewish calendar.

Experience in a synagogue, Jewish nonprofit, Jewish school, JCC, federation, or related Jewish communal setting is strongly preferred. Comfort working in a Conservative synagogue environment is important.

Schedule

This is a full-time role with weekday office hours and regular Shabbat morning coordination responsibilities. Attendance or staff coverage is required for selected Shabbat, holiday, High Holy Day, lifecycle, rental, and congregational programs.

When Shabbat, holiday, evening, or weekend coverage is required, the workweek may be adjusted, such as taking another weekday off, in coordination with lay leadership.
