Director of Life-Long Learning
The Director of Life-Long Learning [D3L] is a full-time senior professional staff member providing Jewish educational insight, direction, and mentoring for the breadth of the Temple’s Religious School and adult learning programs. In line with the values and direction of the synagogue’s strategic plan, the D3L infuses Jewish perspectives and values into educational programming and activities of the Temple. The D3L reports to our Senior Rabbi and works in conjunction with our Executive Director and lay leaders.
Temple Emanu El is a mid-sized Reform congregation in Northeast Ohio. Supported by the extensive resources of the Jewish Education Center of Cleveland and the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, our acclaimed Religious School is thriving. The Director of Life-Long Learning’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Program Management
- Directs, coordinates, administers, and teaches in the Religious School, focusing on contemporary Judaic and Hebrew learning modalities within a traditional Sunday/Monday/Tuesday supplemental school model
- Develops, teaches, and supervises adult learning and family and early engagement programming
- Fosters integration of Judaism and teaches Hebrew, holiday, and associated curricula in the Preschool
- Organizes, schedules, and tutors students on Torah, Haftarah, and prayers for B’nai Mitzvah preparation
- Implements a vision for excellence incorporating best practices in Jewish education
- Employs assessment tools to systematically measure and evaluate the effectiveness of the congregation’s educational programs and learning strategies
- Maintains ongoing, regular communication with students and their families
- Manages the Religious School registration process
Human Resource Management
- Fosters a positive work environment promoting collaboration among education faculty
- Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates religious school faculty, madrichim, and adult education instructors
- Supervises the Youth and Family Program Director
- Encourages professional development and growth opportunities for faculty and staff
Fiscal Management
- Prepares and implements the annual education budget
- Submits religious school payroll monthly
- Identifies and develops grant and/or funding opportunities
Temple and Community Relations
- Leads worship services, adult education classes, and other congregational functions in Rabbi Matt’s absence
- Maintains strong relationships with students, faculty, families, staff, lay leaders, the congregation, and Cleveland Jewish community
- Serves as primary staff representative to the Temple’s Education and Interfaith Programming Committees
- Partners on new member recruitment and facilitates Religious School enrollment
- Maintains communication with the Board of Trustees and committees
- Maintains active connections with local, regional, and national Jewish education organizations
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Jewish Studies or related field (Master’s degree preferred)
- Knowledge and skills to integrate the principles of Reform Judaism into all activities
- Classroom management skills
- Experience in developing and implementing both formal and informal educational curricula
- Judaic content knowledge and ability to teach Hebrew reading skills
- Ability to teach educational pedagogy to teachers
- Team-building and supervisory skills
Terms of Employment
- Hours to include a minimum of 27-30 Sundays from 8 am-1 pm; Mondays from 5 pm-9 pm; Tuesdays from 3 pm-6:30 pm; and remaining full-time hours throughout the work week and weekends as necessary for programming
- Attendance at events involving religious school students including, but not limited to, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur family programming/services; overnight retreats as scheduled; and B’nai Mitzvah services
- Attendance at Education Committee meetings, JEC’s Education Director’s Network, and other meetings upon request
- Maintains a presence at Temple events
Salary
$78,000-$93,000 commensurate with experience

Founded in 1947, Temple Emanu El is a Reform congregation serving 325 member units in the Jewish communities of Greater Cleveland, western Geauga, northwestern Portage, and northern Summit counties. Rabbi Matt Cohen, our spiritual leader and senior rabbi, works collaboratively with our administrative, education, and support staff and supervised the Director of Lifelong Learning and the Director of Early Childhood Education [D3E]. Our Executive Director oversees our Finance Director, Creative Director, Administrative Assistant, Head Custodian, and part-time maintenance staff. Our D3L supervises the Youth & Family Program Director as well as all religious schoolteachers. Our D3E supervises the Assistant Preschool Director and all preschool teachers.
By working at Temple Emanu El, the D3L will be afforded resources from our congregation and the Cleveland Jewish community. This position will also receive support from the staff and lay leadership and will collaborate directly with the Religious School Liaison from the Board of Trustees and the temple Education Committee.
