Executive Director

Position Summary

The Executive Director serves as the synagogue’s chief administrative and operating officer, responsible for financial oversight, governance support, human resources administration, facilities management, technology systems, risk management, and operational excellence. The Executive Director partners closely with the President, Officers, Clergy, and senior staff to ensure that the congregation’s mission is supported through sound management, fiscal responsibility, and effective organizational infrastructure.

1. Governance & Lay Leadership Support

  • Serve as senior staff liaison to the Board of Trustees and designated lay committees.
  • Attend all Board meetings and provide operational and financial reports.
  • Support committee chairs in carrying out their governance responsibilities and strategic objectives.
  • Assist President and Officers in leadership development and orientation, committee structure alignment, and volunteer engagement related to governance and fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Ensure implementation of Board-approved policies and strategic priorities.
  • Support and uphold decisions of the Officers and Board of Trustees.

(Programming development, congregational engagement strategy, and membership outreach functions are led by clergy and designated program staff.)

2. Financial Management & Stewardship

Financial Operations

  • Oversee all financial operations in compliance with the approved annual budget.
  • Supervise revenue collection, deposits, accounts payable, and expense management to ensure accuracy, confidentiality, and timeliness.
  • Prepare and distribute monthly financial reports to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Partner with the Treasurer in presenting monthly and annual financial reports.
  • Collaborate with the Treasurer and Budget & Finance Committee to develop the annual budget and a rolling three-year financial plan.
  • Monitor cash flow and banking relationships to ensure liquidity and financial stability.
  • Oversee endowment accounting and reporting.
  • Monitor investment activity in coordination with the Treasurer and investment advisors.
  • Ensure compliance with tax regulations, audit requirements, and all regulatory filings.
  • Oversee outside accounting and bookkeeping vendors.

Fundraising Support (Operational & Financial Oversight)

  • Partner with the Development Associate and lay leadership to support fundraising campaigns from an operational and financial oversight perspective.
  • Ensure accurate financial tracking of pledges, gifts, grants, and campaign reporting.
  • Provide financial analysis and reporting to support development strategy.
  • Oversee and manage quality control for all Temple communications, especially those related to fundraising.  Advance financial development communications to support fundraising campaigns.
  • Serve as Member of the Endowment Committee and Financial Development Committee and foster coordination between the two committees.

3. Human Resources & Organizational Administration

  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate administrative, office, and facilities personnel (in coordination with clergy where responsibilities intersect).
  • Maintain updated job descriptions and organizational chart.
  • Conduct and document annual performance evaluations of direct reports (shared responsibility where appropriate).
  • Ensure compliance with employment law, personnel policies, and best practices.
  • Oversee payroll coordination, salary administration, and benefits administration.
  • Monitor employee timekeeping and leave tracking.
  • Maintain secure and complete personnel records.
  • Support onboarding and professional development for administrative and facilities staff.
  • Establish and enforce employment and office policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate staff workflow and internal operations in collaboration with clergy and senior staff.

4. Facilities & Risk Management

  • Oversee maintenance, safety, security, and appearance of synagogue facilities and grounds.
  • Supervise custodial and maintenance personnel (in coordination with the Program Director for event logistics).
  • Conduct regular facility inspections and ensure timely repair and preventative maintenance.
  • Oversee capital projects, renovations, and major repairs.
  • Negotiate and manage vendor contracts for facilities, services, and equipment.
  • Manage insurance coverage and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Oversee safety protocols and emergency preparedness procedures.
  • Monitor utilities usage and operational efficiencies.
  • Administer policies governing facility usage and outside vendors.
  • Manage cemetery operations and land sales (if applicable).
  • Support High Holy Days and major events from an operational and facilities perspective (shared responsibility with the Program Director).

5. Technology & Systems Oversight

  • Oversee synagogue management systems (e.g., ShulCloud) and ensure data integrity and operational efficiency.
  • Evaluate and recommend technology improvements to enhance administrative effectiveness.
  • Supervise external IT vendors and technology service providers.
  • Ensure cybersecurity, data privacy, and proper system usage protocols.

6. Data Governance & Reporting

  • Ensure accurate maintenance of official membership and financial records in coordination with appropriate staff.
  • Provide leadership with relevant demographic and financial reporting to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Oversee data integrity, reporting standards, and record retention policies.

7. Vendor & Contract Management

  • Negotiate and oversee contracts with vendors, consultants, service providers, and professional advisors.
  • Monitor vendor performance and ensure cost-effective service delivery.
  • Maintain strategic relationships that enhance synagogue operations and financial stewardship.

The compensation range for this position is $140,000-$160,000 which is inclusive of all benefits, FICA, professional dues, professional development, pension and disability insurance.
