The Career Counselor/JOIN Program Coordinator will work with career counseling clients assisting them in developing long-term and short-term career development plans. In addition, this position will coordinate the eight-week summer internship program for college students.   



Master's degree required in social work, counseling or related fields.


Licensure as an LMSW, LLMSW, LPC, LLPC or have a related equivalent certification.

Two to three years related experience working with a wide range of individuals. 

Experience conducting career and personality assessments, group counseling and job placement preferred.

Interpersonal skills sufficient to communicate with clients, students, supervisory and administrative staff, both within JVS + Kadima and at Jewish communal agencies.

Composition and time management skills sufficient to prepare required reports and correspondence as well as the ability to successfully handle multiple projects concurrently are needed.

Knowledge of metro Detroit Jewish communal agencies preferred. 


Career Counselor

Complete initial intake assessments for each client assigned and maintain ongoing assessment of needs.

Establish and maintain a counseling relationship with the client and develop and implement a counseling plan.

 Achieve a Career Development Plan (CDP) rate that is consistent with current Agency goals.

Conduct group counseling sessions, as assigned.

Administer and interpret vocational test battery.

Assist client to interpret and integrate vocational information to develop a career plan.

Obtain necessary services for clients by referring and coordinating with other disciplines within the agency or community.

Assist clients with job seeking skills, (i.e. resume preparation, interviewing skills, etc.) and in conducting a job search.

Assist clients to effectively adjust to the work environment.

Maintain case records, correspondence, weekly statistics and agency reporting requirements including entering case notes and service statue into electronic record system.

Participate in planning, executing, and staffing departmental programming.

Serve on Agency committee(s) as appointed.

JOIN Program Coordinator:

In conjunction with Marketing and Communications staff, develop the JOIN marketing plan and collateral materials, including advertisements and press releases.

Contact and maintain relationships with existing and potential participating Jewish communal agencies and organizations.

Interview potential interns and select finalists.

Coordinate interviews with supervisors from participating organizations, matching both intern's and organization's preferences.

Plan and organize weekly seminars.

Plan and facilitate supervisor and intern orientation, group reviews and group evaluation meetings.

Provide guidance and work adjustment counseling to interns and supervisors.

Conduct site visits with supervisors and interns.

Write annual JOIN Summary report based on analysis of completed program evaluation forms.


Represent JVS + Kadima at community events and meetings.


Work involves flexible schedule including evening hours.
