Temple Beth Hillel is seeking a Cantor, Cantorial Soloist, Cantorial Student, or Song Leader to help lead music for our services. We are looking for someone to:

  • Lead Reform-style services using traditional & contemporary melodies and Mishkan T'Filah
  • Create a spiritual connection with the congregation through music
  • Engage with the congregation and encourage us to sing along

 

Required Skills:

  • Knowledge of and passion for Reform Jewish liturgy - Both Hebrew & English
  • Experience in leading Jewish worship
  • Experience interacting with children and adults


Responsibilities include:

  • Friday night (generally twice monthly - 1st & 3rd Shabbat) and infrequent Saturday morning Shabbat services, including b'nai mitzvah.
  • Collaborate with the Rabbi and the Head of the Religious School
  • Helping to lead weekly Sunday Morning T'filah with our Religious School, Beit Midrash Hillel (during school year)
  • Ability to co-lead services with the Rabbi and if the Rabbi is unavailable, to lead the service
  • Help to lead and/or take point on various holiday services/events (e.g., Pesach, Yom HaShoah, Simchat Torah, Chanukkah, and Purim)

 

Preferred Skills/Duties:

  • High Holy Day services, including working with Rabbi & Ritual Committee (and if relevant - volunteer choir & choir director)
  • Assisting with life-cycle events.
  • Ability to teach prayers and Torah / Haftarah trope to b'nai mitzvah students.
  • Self-accompaniment on guitar or other instrument(s).
  • Familiarity with Mishkan T'filah.

This position always has room for growth. We are open to ideas, such as musical programming, introduction of various musical influences, & etc.


About Us

We are a small, warm and inclusive Reform synagogue in Richmond, California, now celebrating our 80th year as a spiritual home for Jewish families from West Contra Costa County and beyond. As a small congregation, we value deep connections, meaningful relationships, and a true sense of belonging. We like to sing along and need an accessible vocal range for congregational pieces. We like traditional/familiar Jewish liturgy and Holiday nusach and we are open to some musical innovation.

 

CompensationBased on experience and education, up to a maximum of $14,000 in total annual compensation prorated for the period actually served.  The position is open now, and we intend that it will be filled no later than November 1, 2026 and continue through June 30, 2027, and we anticipate a renewal through June 30, 2028, subject to negotiation.

Please note: This position is part-time and in person in Richmond, CA. We are seeking candidates local to the San Francisco Bay Area.
