Cantorial Soloist/Song leader

Temple Beth David of the South Shore (templebethdavid.com), a Reform Synagogue in Canton, MA, is seeking a Cantor soloist, Cantorial intern, or song leader to work with our Rabbi and congregation as an integral part of the Temple’s worship and celebratory practices. Right now this will be for a one year contract as a part-time position, which will run from July 2026 through June 2027, with the possibility of it being extended by mutual agreement.

A little bit about us:

Temple Beth David is a small, participatory Reform Jewish congregation with approximately 100 member units/families. We are welcoming, inclusive, vibrant and innovative, celebrating our congregation of individuals and families from different backgrounds and holding divergent points of view. Music is at the very center of our worship practices.

Through lifelong learning and teaching of the Torah, we search for meaning, seeking comfort, healing, and celebration in our lives. TBD reaches out to our neighbors in the communities where we live and beyond through community service, embracing causes of social justice and providing opportunities to accomplish deeds of loving-kindness.

Core responsibilities of this position include:

  • Provide the cantorial Services for the High Holy Days, along with directing the volunteer congregant choir;
  • Participation in 25-30 Shabbat services, to be split between Friday nights (majority) and Saturday mornings (including an estimated two B’nai Mitzvot), to be determined by the Rabbi, candidate and the Religious Affairs Committee;
  • Provide musical leadership for select festival services (e.g., Hanukkah, Purim, Shavuot, Passover, Sukkot, etc.);
  • Participate in our Sunday religious education program on a monthly basis. An option for teaching in our Sunday-only Religious/Hebrew school program is available, though this would be negotiated separately.
  • Meet with the Rabbi to determine the musical selections for the High Holidays
  • Direct adult choir rehearsals in preparation for the high Holidays;

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be of the Jewish faith
  • Experience leading Shabbat services in a Jewish congregation, Hillel setting or similar, preferably Reform
  • Knowledge of traditional and contemporary Jewish liturgy for Shabbat
  • Knowledge of contemporary and traditional melodies, and an interest in staying up to date on developments in music in the Reform movement
  • Ability to self-accompany on guitar strongly preferred; versatility with other instruments would be considered
  • Musical style is participatory rather than performance-oriented
  • Experience and willingness to work with children
  • Knowledge of Hebrew is a plus but not required
  • Ability to chant Torah is an added asset, though not a requirement

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Projected salary up to $15,000, dependent upon the negotiated number of services and Sunday mornings.
  • To apply, please email [email protected] with your resume and link(s) to video and/or audio samples. We expect initial interviews to be conducted via Zoom or similar platform.

All candidates under consideration will be subject to a background check.
