Major Gift Officer

Location: Washington, D.C. or NYC (Hybrid – 3 days on-site)

Salary Range: $110,000 – $135,000

Position Summary 

The Louis D. Brandeis Center seeks a Major Gift Officer to join its dynamic and growing Development team. This is a frontline fundraising position responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts from foundations and high-net-worth individuals. The Major Gift Officer will manage a portfolio of donors and prospects through all stages of the donor lifecycle, achieving measurable fundraising metrics and annual revenue goals.

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Major Gift Officer will play a key role in expanding the Brandeis Center’s philanthropic support and advancing its mission.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward annual gifts of $25,000 and above.
  • Build and manage a portfolio of approximately 125 major gift donors and prospects.
  • Identify and qualify 10–20 new major gift prospects annually and cultivate them toward inclusion in the major gift portfolio.
  • Develop and execute individualized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for each assigned prospect, moving donors through the fundraising cycle toward successful solicitation.
  • Coordinate donor strategies with the Chief Development Officer, CEO, Board members, attorneys, and other staff, as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of all donor interactions, strategies, and next steps in the organization’s CRM.
  • Ensure positive, purposeful donor engagement through a disciplined moves management process.
  • Plan and execute donor cultivation events, individual meetings, and solicitation opportunities.
  • Collaborate across departments to identify philanthropic opportunities and align fundraising strategies with organizational priorities.
  • Participate actively in organizational planning and contribute to fundraising strategy and development initiatives.
  • Meet or exceed annual performance metrics for donor contacts, visits, solicitations, and revenue, as established by the Chief Development Officer.
  • Personally solicit major gifts and prepare organizational leadership, including the CEO, senior staff, attorneys, and volunteer leaders, for donor solicitations.
  • Travel as needed to cultivate and solicit donors throughout the region and nationally.

Education and Experience

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Seven or more years of progressively responsible fundraising experience, with significant experience in major gifts.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of major gift fundraising principles and best practices, including prospect identification and qualification, portfolio management, donor cultivation, solicitation strategy, gift closure, and stewardship.
  • Proven success building a major gift pipeline and securing five- and six-figure philanthropic gifts.

  • Executive presence and sound judgment that inspire confidence among donors, organizational leadership, and external stakeholders.
  • Passion for the Brandeis Center’s mission and the ability to communicate its unique impact with enthusiasm and credibility.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends and to travel regionally and nationally up to 40% of the time.
