Talmud Torah of Minneapolis is a vibrant, historic Conservative Jewish supplementary school serving over 175 students in grades 2–8. With over 125 years of community leadership, we are rooted in tradition while boldly reimagining Jewish education for today and tomorrow. A core responsibility of this role is balancing strong, collaborative relationships with clergy and synagogue partners (Adath Jeshurun and Beth El) while ensuring that the school’s educational philosophy, curriculum, and culture are aligned with its mission. Moreover, the Head of School’s approach will be enriched and informed by navigating a shared governance environment with transparency, strong communication and a regular ability to pivot and evolve as needed.

Position Summary
The Head of School is the chief educational and administrative leader of Talmud Torah, reporting to the Board of Directors through the Board President. The Head of School is responsible for leading the continued evolution of the school’s vision, shaping the future of Jewish learning at Talmud Torah, leading and building a dedicated team of educators, managing operations, and fostering an inclusive, student-centered learning environment.
The Head of School must excel in balancing strategic leadership with the realities of a supplementary education model that maximizes limited instructional hours while engaging students meaningfully in Hebrew, Judaics, and experiential learning.
Key Responsibilities
Educational Vision & Innovation
- Lead and continuously improve a learner-centered, relevant curriculum that reflects Jewish values and meets diverse student needs.
- Integrate experiential learning across the curriculum, including arts, social action, holiday celebrations, and community-based learning.
- Initiate developmentally appropriate and identity-forming Israel education that fosters pride, critical thinking, and global Jewish awareness.
- Evaluate and evolve educational models based on student outcomes and faculty feedback.
- Maximize impact within a supplementary school schedule, ensuring Hebrew and Judaic learning feel cohesive, relevant, and engaging.
Faculty & Staff Leadership
- Develop, lead, hire, and retain excellent teachers and staff aligned with the school’s mission and approach.
- Provide mentorship, supervision, and professional development that promotes growth and collaboration.
- Foster a culture of excellence, inclusion, and shared accountability.
Family & Community Engagement
- Build strong, trusting relationships with families and caregivers.
- Serve as a visible and trusted ambassador of the school within the broader Jewish and educational communities.
- Build and maintain relationships with leaders of communal organizations to enhance Talmud Torah’s visibility and strengthen institutional partnerships.
- Offer family education experiences and promote parental involvement.
- Prioritize inclusion, accessibility, and respect for all family structures and learning styles.
Operational & Financial Management
- Oversee all aspects of daily operations including facilities, security, budgeting, and shared space infrastructure.
- Partner with the Finance Director and Board Treasurer to maintain financial sustainability.
- Manage enrollment, scheduling, and student records using platforms like RenWeb/FACTS.
- Ensure compliance with school policies, handbooks, and safety/security procedures.
Development & Communications
- Partner with the Board and lay leaders on philanthropic strategy, donor cultivation, and stewardship.
- Grow school visibility through newsletters, synagogue communications, and community partnerships.
- Write and contribute to grant proposals and community reports.
Clergy & Synagogue Partnership
- Serve as the key liaison between Talmud Torah and its two partner congregations, fostering collaboration with clergy and synagogue leaders.
- Collaborate on program development, lifecycle preparation, and shared Jewish calendar planning.
- Participate in synagogue events and communal initiatives as needed.
Required Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in education or related field.
- 8+ years of leadership experience in Jewish education or general education settings.
- Deep familiarity with Jewish traditions, lifecycle events, and synagogue culture.
- Demonstrated ability to lead inclusively and respond to diverse student and family needs.
- Strong administrative, budgeting, and organizational skills.
- Proficient in Google Workspace, educational platforms (i.e. FACTS/RenWeb), and communication tools.
Preferred Experience
- Advanced degree in education, Judaic studies, or community leadership preferred (rabbinical or cantorial experience a plus). Candidates with an equivalent blend of experience in Jewish and/or educational leadership will also be considered.
- Speak Hebrew
- Experience in Judaic or Hebrew education strongly valued.
Schedule & Work Environment
Full-time position requiring presence during weekday afternoons/evenings and Sundays throughout the academic year.
- Includes meetings and events with synagogues, families, faculty, and community partners.
- In-person leadership role with flexibility during non-peak periods.
- Must be able to perform typical school duties such as walking between classrooms, standing for periods of time, assisting with classroom setup, and supervising transitions.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Compensation & Benefits
$120,000-$150,000, commensurate with experience. Includes professional development support, benefits (see below), relocation support if necessary and a strong culture of lay-professional partnership.
