Description

About Us:

Beth Israel is a welcoming, diverse congregation with deep roots in the Baltimore area. We come together on Shabbat and holidays to celebrate the Jewish tradition in prayer and song. We are more than a place of worship; we are a vibrant community built on meaningful relationships, shared traditions, and spiritual growth.

We are a congregation that loves to sing and values participatory worship. We seek a musical prayer leader to join our rabbi in shaping an inspiring prayer experience in which congregants are actively involved. While our services are rooted in the traditions and liturgy of the Conservative Movement, we are open to a variety of musical approaches and welcome a prayer leader who will bring their own insights and interpretations, helping to create a service experience that is shared, heartfelt, and alive.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the shaliach tzibbur for an average of 4 Shabbat services per month, primarily Saturday mornings, as well as festival morning services.
  • Provide musical direction and accompaniment for services.
  • Encourage congregational participation in singing and prayer.
  • Build strong relationships with congregants of all ages – especially with younger families – and foster a sense of belonging.
  • Work closely with the rabbi to develop an inspiring worship experience.
  • Introduce new musical styles and approaches while respecting and preserving traditional liturgy.
  • Adapt services to meet the evolving needs of the congregation.

Required Qualifications:

  • Prior cantorial or congregational service leadership experience.
  • Proficiency in traditional Jewish liturgical music and knowledge of Jewish prayers and ritual tradition.
  • Fluency in liturgical Hebrew.
  • Strong vocal and musical abilities.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills.
  • Ability to engage and inspire congregants of all ages; strong rapport with younger adults and children.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with contemporary Jewish liturgical repertoire.
  • Ability to accompany oneself instrumentally.

Note: Leading High Holy Day services is not included in this position. However, the successful candidate could also be considered for that role with additional compensation.

Salary range: $22,000 - $27,000 annually, range commensurate with experience and agreed upon specifics of responsibilities via agreement.

Start date: Summer 2026 or as negotiated.

Application Process: Interested candidates should submit a resume, cover letter, and links/recordings of liturgical singing (without instrumental or choir accompaniment) to [email protected]
