Cantor/Cantorial Soloist HHD 5787

Temple Etz Chaim, a vibrant and warm Reform synagogue in Franklin, Massachusetts, seeks a cantor/cantorial soloist/cantorial or musical rabbinical student for the 5787 High Holy Days (Fall 2026).

About Us:

We are a creative, diverse, growing community of around 100 member families. As the only Reform synagogue in the area, we draw members from Metrowest and the South Area of Boston. We hold our High Holy Day services at the First Universalist Society of Franklin in a beautiful, light filled sanctuary. We're building a dynamic musical culture that includes both nusach and contemporary melodies while eliciting congregational participation. We use the Reform mahzor, Mishkan Hanefesh.

The Role:

We are looking for a cantor, cantorial soloist, cantorial student, or musical rabbinical student with a pleasant singing voice whose leading style invites congregants to participate in the service.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Leading musical prayer for:
    • Rosh Hashanah: first day morning service
    • Yom Kippur: morning service, afternoon service, Yizkor and Ne’ilah
  • Gabbai and assist with Torah services

** Please note that this position does not include responsibilities on either Erev Rosh Hashanah or Kol Nidrei. The person hired is welcome to attend these services, but will have no formal leading role.

Additional responsibilities, based on skills and availability, may include:

  • Working with our lay choir, including 2-4 rehearsals (in-person or via Zoom, depending on location of candidate).
  • Chanting Torah using High Holy Day trope
  • Leading a supplementary text-based learning program on Yom Kippur afternoon

What we're looking for:

  • Strong chazanut skills and comfort co-leading Torah service
  • Ability to play guitar (preferred but not required)
  • Knowledge of High Holy Day nusach
  • Familiarity with both traditional and contemporary melodies, as well as Reform liturgy
  • Someone potentially seeking continuity, with possible interest for returning multiple years (preferred but not required)
  • An engaging service leader/song leader who encourages congregants to join in the singing

Compensation inclusive of all travel expenses: $4,500 - $8,000 depending on credentials and experience.

To apply: Please send a resume, a cover letter, and two professional references to Rabbi Rachel Putterman at [email protected]
