Director of Community Engagement

These are exciting times at Temple Shir Tikva, and we are looking for you to partner with us as our new Director of Community Engagement. This position is open, and we aim to hire for a start date of November 2, 2026.

Temple Shir Tikva is the leading synagogue in Boston’s MetroWest. Our membership is growing, our program is expanding, and we are looking to strengthen our fabulous professional team.

As Director of Community Engagement, you will be responsible for engaging and recruiting new members; supporting clergy- and congregant-initiated programs; and helping us create scalable processes to make it easier and more efficient for our growing congregation to offer a wide variety of effective programming. 

New Membership Engagement and Recruiting (20%)

• Respond to new member inquiries, talk to potential members, and send membership applications
• Coordinate with Director of Education to provide information to new members about our education programs
• Work with the New Membership and Marketing trustees to support programs or events to recruit and welcome new members
• Greet new members and work to find ways to quickly engage them with the community
• Ensure staff and clergy are reaching out to new members

Event Management and Support (50%)

• Manage and support clergy-led and congregant-led events; provide support for events to increase capacity for programming.
• Work with staff and congregants to identify and coordinate resources required (e.g. AV/Custodial support, other staffing, food, setup, calendaring, promotion, purchasing)
• Develop budgets and get approval on spending prior to events
• Be the TST staff person partnering with outside organizations for events taking place at TST (CJP, JFS-MW, JCC, etc.).
• Help create action plans, event setup plans, day-of-event plans for events
• Collect feedback from staff and congregants after the event to continuously improve specific events
• Make recommendations to Leadership Team and Board to improve overall quality of programming for congregants

Ritual Event Management (10%)

• Project manage high holidays and other major worship events to support clergy and professional staff
• Create and manage project plans, budget and track expenses, procure supplies, coordinate staffing
• Work with other staff to calendar, set up registrations, and coordinate communications
• Involve and coordinate volunteers
• Provide on-site staffing and management of events at ritual events as needed.
• Collect feedback from staff and congregants after the event to continuously improve
• Write after-event communications about events for community

Annual Calendar Management (10%)

• Develop calendaring process, monitor calendar, ensure staff and congregant events are calendared and advertised
• Annual and quarterly planning meetings with Leadership team to schedule events over the year
• Serve as a resource for congregants (committees, etc.) to help them find appropriate dates for events
• Ensure appropriate planning time is built in to prepare for major events

Event System and Process Development (10%)

• Develop sustainable event processes, develop self-serve resources for staff and congregants, continuously improve process to create more effective and efficient high-quality programming
• Maintain and improve process (forms, checklists) for congregants to propose events
• Develop event management checklists and guidelines to help congregants self-serve on running events
• Continuously improve process to reduce effort on staff, and improve ability of congregants to operate their own programs

Skills or Background Needed

• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a relationship-driven environment
• Warm and welcoming personality, relating well to people of all ages
• Ability to cultivate relationships with members and be discreet with confidential information
• Calm under pressure, customer service-oriented, flexible, and good sense of humor
• Ability to hold the big picture in mind as well as tend to the small details
• Highly organized with attention to detail and follow-through, and the ability to multitask
• Strong knowledge of Jewish holidays, traditions, and culture and the ability to integrate this into all levels of programming
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Experience with budget development and administration desired
• Fluency with Microsoft Office
• ShulCloud proficiency preferred
• MailChimp and Canva experience preferred
• Comfort using social media to market programs 
• Bachelor’s Degree in related field

Other Requirements

• 2-3 Friday night or Sunday events per month
• Working on Jewish Holidays or Shabbat when events are scheduled

Salary and Benefits

• Salary $65,000-$70,000
• Two weeks paid vacation (first year)
• Federal and Jewish Holidays (excepting those when events are scheduled)
• 10 days sick leave, 2 Personal Days
• Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
• Reform Pension Board option
• 37.5 hour work week
