Position Overview
The Business Manager serves as a key administrative and operational leader within the synagogue, responsible for overseeing financial management, business operations, facilities coordination, and administrative systems. This role supports the Executive Director, clergy, lay leadership, and staff to ensure the smooth and efficient functioning of the congregation in alignment with the values and practices of Conservative Judaism.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management

  • Oversee all day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable, receivable, payroll, and general ledger entries.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports for the Executive Director, Treasurer, and Finance Committee.
  • Assist with annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting best practices and synagogue financial policies.
  • Coordinate with external accountants and auditors as needed.
  • Manage contracts, vendor agreements, and purchasing.

Administration & Office Management

  • Supervise administrative staff and ensure efficient office workflow.
  • Maintain records, member accounts, and synagogue management systems (e.g., ShulCloud).
  • Support the Executive Director with board materials, correspondence, and project management.
  • Oversee insurance policies, risk management, and compliance documentation.
  • Oversee inventory, equipment, and technology needs.

Human Resources

  • Assist with onboarding, training, and personnel record management.
  • Support payroll processes and employee benefits administration.
  • Help maintain workplace policies and ensure compliance with employment regulations.

 

Membership & Program Support

  • Support membership billing, dues collections, and account maintenance.
  • Provide administrative assistance for synagogue programs, lifecycle events, High Holy Days, and community activities.
  • Serve as a professional, welcoming point of contact for congregants, vendors, and community partners.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Nonprofit Management, or related field.
  • 3–5 years of experience in business operations, nonprofit management, or finance; synagogue experience a plus.
  • Strong proficiency in accounting software, spreadsheets, and office management tools.
  • Excellent organizational, time-management, and communication skills.
