Temple Beth El: Director of Community Engagement

Temple Beth El (TBE) seeks a dynamic leader to oversee our membership, volunteerism, and outreach efforts. Reporting directly to the Board of Trustee President, the Director will be the driving force behind our congregational experience and long-term sustainability.

 

Primary Objectives

  • Membership & Revenue: Drive recruitment and retention initiatives to ensure stable, long-term growth.
  • Team Leadership: Oversee part-time staff and collaborate with Clergy and lay leaders to execute TBE’s mission.
  • Strategic Alignment: Translate Board vision into reality, reporting monthly on progress and evolving community needs.
  • Community Presence: Strengthen TBE’s role as a vital institution in the Jewish and Greater Lower Pioneer Valley community.

 

Primary Goals and Responsibilities

Membership, Engagement, and Development

The Director is the primary relationship owner for TBE's membership lifecycle, focused on retention, recruitment, and increasing philanthropic support.

  • Relationship Hub: Serve as the central point of contact for all current members, prospective members, and the general public to proactively strengthen and manage their relationship with TBE.
  • Membership Outreach & Pipeline: Lead the strategy to attract new membership units through strong, integrated marketing (social media, website, etc.) to create interest in TBE. Conduct personal contact with potential new members to make it easy to join.
  • Volunteer & Donor Engagement: Cultivate a culture of sacred service, building systems for volunteer recruitment, retention, and recognition that foster a deep sense of belonging and shared ownership among congregants and community members.
  • Internal Connections: In partnership with the Temple President and Rabbi, encourage the creation and growth of groups and volunteer committees, providing oversight to multiply engagement touchpoints
  • Legacy Giving: Establish and manage a formal planned giving program to secure the Temple’s financial future
  • Revenue Diversification: Identify and execute strategies to expand income sources beyond membership dues, ensuring long-term organizational stability.
  • Lifecycle Event Logistics: Assist members (and non-members as needed) with the coordination and execution of logistics surrounding major lifecycle events (births, B’nei Mitzvah, weddings, memorial plaques and funeral/burial arrangements).

 

Property Management and Business Operations

The Director manages TBE's physical assets to maximize revenue and ensure a safe, functional environment.

  • Venue Infrastructure & Marketing: Create the required infrastructure (marketing, pricing, and process) to effectively market TBE as a desired external event venue, driving third-party rental revenue.
  • Event Oversight: Work with office staff to ensure timely setup (including A/V and livestreaming needs) and contracted, board-approved security at every event.
  • IT and Technology Management: Oversee the management, maintenance, and functionality of all IT equipment

 

Community Liaison and External Partnership

The Director ensures TBE is strongly positioned and actively collaborating within the broader Jewish and local community to maximize utilization of the campus.

  • Educational Partnership: Partner directly with the B'yachad Executive Director to bring school events to TBE.
  • Venue Utilization: Proactively encourage organizations to hold events at TBE, maximizing rental revenue and communal visibility.

 

Essential Administrative Functions

The Director will ensure the continuity of core organizational functions:

  • Personnel & Communications: Create, collect, and organize content for relevant minutes, bulletins, mailings, newsletters, and digital promotions in concert with the TBE staff.
  • Team Empowerment: Cultivate a high-performing office culture through active mentorship and resource sharing. Provides hands-on support to ensure all synagogue objectives are met.
  • Governance & Strategic Reporting: Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Board of Directors, delivering regular, presentations regarding community engagement, volunteer milestones, and progress toward long-term organizational goals.

 

Ideal Qualifications

  • Experience: Proven, successful experience in non-profit operations (e.g., Executive Director, Synagogue Administrator), finance, facility management, and marketing/engagement, where membership engagement and revenue growth was a primary objective.
  • Attributes: Warm, dynamic, self-motivated, innovative thinker, and a successful networker with exceptional customer service skills
  • Knowledge: Knowledgeable about Jewish practices and beliefs, with an openness to continuous learning.
  • Partnership: Demonstrated ability to work in a friendly and with clergy, professional staff, and lay members.
  • Availability: This position requires regular attendance at Shabbat services and other key synagogue activities on the weekend and in the evening. The candidate must have the flexibility and willingness to work evenings and weekends as a core requirement of the role.

 

Compensation & Commitment

  • Schedule & Flexibility: We value results over rigid clock-watching. This role typically requires a commitment of 20 to 40 hours per week. We pride ourselves on being inclusive of unique personal schedules and are committed to building a workflow that respects your life outside of work. While the nature of our mission means evening or weekend engagement may be necessary, we prioritize "flex-time" to ensure your total weekly contribution remains balanced.
  • Compensation: We believe in fair, transparent, and competitive pay. Final compensation will be negotiated based on market data and the specific expertise you bring to the table.
  • Salary Range: For full-time engagement (40 hours/week), the anticipated salary range is $60,000 – $70,000, prorated accordingly for part-time schedules.
