Director of Media Relations

Position Overview

The Lawfare Project is seeking an experienced, well-connected media relations leader to join our team full-time and elevate our national and international media presence.

This is not a traditional communications role. We are looking for a media powerhouse with deep, established relationships across major television, print, digital, and radio outlets who can consistently secure high-profile coverage and position The Lawfare Project at the center of the national conversation.

The ideal candidate will bring an extensive network of journalists, editors, producers, and newsroom decision-makers and will know how to turn breaking developments, legal victories, and advocacy initiatives into compelling stories that generate broad media attention.

This individual should have a demonstrated track record of securing top-tier media placements for organizations, and executives while proactively identifying opportunities to shape the news cycle. They will play a key role in establishing The Lawfare Project as the leading voice on antisemitism, civil rights, legal advocacy, and issues affecting the Jewish community.

The primary objective of this role is to secure consistent, high-impact media coverage for The Lawfare Project and the #EndJewHatred movement through strategic media relationships, proactive outreach, and effective story placement. Success will be measured by the quality, frequency, and reach of the media coverage secured.

Key Responsibilities

Media Relations & Placement

  • Leverage existing relationships with journalists, editors, producers, and media executives to secure consistent coverage in major mainstream media outlets.
  • Develop and execute proactive media strategies that result in ongoing earned media coverage rather than one-off placements.
  • Cultivate and strengthen relationships with key national and international journalists, editors, producers, and newsroom decision-makers.
  • Identify and create newsworthy opportunities that position The Lawfare Project and #EndJewHatred at the center of public conversations about antisemitism, civil rights, and related issues.
  • Secure interviews, feature stories, op-eds, guest appearances, and expert commentary across television, radio, podcasts, print, and digital media.

Strategic Communications

  • Develop messaging strategies that amplify legal victories, advocacy initiatives, and grassroots campaigns.
  • Translate complex legal issues into compelling stories that resonate with mainstream audiences.
  • Align messaging across both organizations to maximize visibility and impact.

Advocacy & Campaign Communications

  • Partner with legal and advocacy teams to elevate major cases, campaigns, legislative initiatives, and public actions.
  • Create media moments that drive national awareness and influence public discourse.

Rapid Response Communications

  • Lead rapid response media efforts in coordination with legal and advocacy teams during breaking news, protests, legal filings, high-profile incidents, and emergency matters.
  • Develop talking points and draft statements under tight deadlines.
  • Monitor media and social landscape in real time and identify emerging narratives, advising senior leadership in appropriate public response and media strategy.

Media Monitoring

  • Engage in real-time tracking and analysis of earned media coverage using industry-standard tools.
  • Promptly obtain clips of video segments featuring, including, or mentioning The Lawfare Project. #EndJewHatred, and related activities.
  • Promptly obtain clips of other media formats featuring, including, or mentioning The Lawfare Project, #EndHewHatred, and related activities.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in media relations, strategic communications, public affairs, journalism, or a related field.  Experience in advocacy, public affairs, nonprofit, political, legal, or issue-based organizations preferred.
  • Extensive, active network of journalists, editors, producers, and newsroom decision-makers across major national and international media organizations.
  • Demonstrated track record of securing consistent, high-profile media coverage.
  • Experience obtaining television bookings, feature stories, op-ed placements, and high-profile interviews.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated experience drafting press releases, media advisories, op-eds, and spokesperson talking points.
  • Proven ability to leverage media relationships to secure timely, high-impact coverage.
  • Strong understanding of the national media landscape and how newsrooms operate.
  • Proficiency with media monitoring, CRM, and analytics platforms (e.g., Cision, Muck Rack).
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and respond quickly to breaking news and emerging issues.
  • Commitment to advancing civil rights, combating Jew-hatred, and supporting the mission of The Lawfare Project.

Compensation & Benefits

This is a full-time, exempt position with a salary range of $80,000 – $100,000. The Lawfare Project offers a comprehensive benefits package, including full medical, dental, and vision coverage, a 403(b) retirement plan, paid time off and holidays, and the flexibility of remote work. Occasional travel for media appearances, events, or in-person meetings may be required.
