The Stanley I. Chera School is seeking a dynamic and experienced General Studies Principal for Grades K–4.

This leader will oversee all aspects of the General Studies program, working closely with the Head of School, Judaic Studies Director, and Middle School Director to ensure a cohesive and high-quality educational experience across divisions. The ideal candidate is committed to educational excellence, deeply knowledgeable about best practices in instruction, and skilled in guiding teachers, supporting students, and partnering with families.

Key responsibilities include ensuring strong curricular alignment, leading professional development, monitoring student progress, coordinating academic programming and trips, supporting intervention processes, maintaining compliance with state requirements, and collaborating with the leadership team on scheduling, communications, and hiring.

This is an exciting opportunity for a mission-driven educator to shape a vibrant, rigorous, and nurturing K–4 General Studies experience.

Tasks & Responsibilities Checklist:

Curriculum Development  

  • Staying up to date with best practices and research in GS curriculum and instruction 
  • Inquiring about new curriculum, piloting and implementing when possible  
  • Overseeing state testing  
  • Attend curriculum / pedagogical professional development  
  • Ensure horizontal and vertical curriculum alignment – across grades and between General Studies and Judaic studies  

Professional Development 

  • In-service days in August to make sure all teachers are familiar with curriculum, protocols, etc. 
  • Organizing professional development workshops throughout the year  
  • Formal observations each semester (biyearly) with pre-observation and post-observations, shared with leadership team 
  • Informal observations bimonthly with timely and constructive teacher feedback  
  • Weekly meetings with grade leaders for content and student check-ins 
  • Identify grade leaders for K and 1 
  • Support teacher growth plans  

Program Development  

  • Setting programming for students related to literacy, math, science, and social studies  
  • Organizing school-wide trips and/or supporting teachers in their planning for school trips 
  • Building partnerships with external organizations to enrich curriculum  

Student Development  

  • Identifying (with HOS) and enforcing discipline policy, setting the tone for student behavior and expectations 
  • Collaborating with the social-emotional team to ensure whole-child development 
  • Monitoring and overseeing assessments, student progress (benchmarks, report cards, progress reports). 
  • Working with teachers to adapt curriculum to meet diverse learning needs  
  • Leading or supporting student intervention meetings (IESP) 
  • Handling parent concerns about academics, hosting information sessions about curriculum as needed. 
  • Reviewing and presenting data trends on academic progress and assessments to leadership as needed. 

Administrative Tasks 

  • Managing and submitting budget proposals and quarterly updates for curriculum, professional development, and programming 
  • Collaborating with the leadership team on setting the school calendar, scheduling, and daily operations  
  • Participating in admissions interviews or assessments  
  • Contributing to internal and external communications about academic programming (newsletters, back-to-school night, etc.) 
  • Staying in compliance with local, state, and national educational regulations (e.g., testing, reporting, funding)  
  • Participating in the recruitment, interviewing, and onboarding process for new General Studies teachers 
  • Create protocols for hiring
