Hourly salary: $25/hour

Expected part-time hours: 15-20 hours per week

 

Position Summary
The Kitchen & Food Service Assistant supports the preparation, service, and cleanup of meals and general food service at the synagogue. This role helps ensure that congregational meals and events run smoothly while maintaining high standards of food safety, organization, and adherence to kosher guidelines. The position assists with regular Shabbat meals, youth programs, special holiday events, and more.

Key Responsibilities

Meal Preparation & Service

  • Assist with preparation of meals and setup for Friday night dinners, Saturday lunches, youth dinners weekly.
  • Help with meal service during congregational events, programs, school and community gatherings.
  • Assist with room set-ups, preparation and logistics for holiday meals and special events throughout the year (e.g., High Holidays, festivals, and synagogue celebrations).

Kitchen Operations

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen environment.
  • Clean kitchen appliances and report anything not in good working order
  • Wash dishes, utensils, cookware, and service items after meals and events.
  • Assist with setting up buffet stations, serving areas, and dining spaces.
  • Properly store food and label items in accordance with food safety and kosher kitchen practices.
  • Assist with basic inventory tasks and restocking kitchen supplies.

Event Support

  • Help coordinate food service logistics for synagogue programs and events.
  • Set up and break down tables, serving stations, and kitchen equipment as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with clergy, staff, volunteers, and caterers to support events.

Compliance & Standards

  • Follow all synagogue kashrut (kosher) guidelines and kitchen procedures.
  • Certified with California Food Hansler Card
  • Maintain food safety standards and proper handling of food and equipment.
  • Adhere to dress code, health, and safety regulations.

Qualifications

  • Experience in food preparation, food service, catering, or institutional kitchens preferred.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and during holiday events.
  • Strong attention to cleanliness and organization.
  • Ability to lift tables, chairs, and carry kitchen supplies and equipment.
  • Comfortable working in a kosher kitchen environment (training will be provided).
  • Team-oriented with a positive and helpful attitude.
  • Ability to follow recipes and directions.
  • Understanding of and good communication in English preferred.
