??? Rabbi Search – The New Shul, Scottsdale, AZ
A traditional, egalitarian, independent Jewish community
The New Shul is seeking a new rabbi to guide our spiritually-rooted, open-hearted congregation in Scottsdale, Arizona. Our founding rabbis, Michael Wasserman and Elana Kanter, are preparing for retirement after more than two decades of visionary leadership and are available to mentor our next spiritual leader during a thoughtful transition.
?? About Our Community
We are a traditional and egalitarian synagogue — fiercely independent, spiritually grounded, and deeply connected. We pray with the Koren Siddur, sing together with nigunim, and show up for one another with sincerity and joy.
The New Shul was founded to embody an alternative to consumer-based Judaism. We have no fixed membership dues. Our community is sustained by voluntary generosity and shared responsibility. We center spirituality over materialism, believing that a meaningful Jewish life is best cultivated through learning, prayer, ethical living, and service — not transactional structures.
We are a community of people who genuinely like one another, who bring our whole selves into the circle, and who want a rabbi who will lead with heart, humility, and presence.
?? What We’re Looking For
We seek a rabbi who will walk with us — not in front of us. Someone who:
- Honors tradition while engaging the diversity of modern Jewish lives
- Loves to sing and pray with people, not just for them
- Is moved more by Torah’s ethical vision than by institutional polish
- Understands that authenticity is the new charisma
- Can teach, speak, counsel, and inspire — but also listen deeply
- Values community-led creativity and grassroots ownership
?? What We Offer
- A cohesive and caring community that values intention over performance
- A congregation that shows up — to pray, to study, to celebrate, and to grieve — together
- The chance to build alongside a founding rabbi who are available a mentor and support you
- A life in Scottsdale-Phoenix, where desert beauty meets urban vibrancy
?? Qualifications
- Ordination from a recognized seminary or equivalent rabbinic credentials
- Experience leading meaningful, participatory prayer in traditional settings
- A deep comfort with egalitarian halachic practice
- A pastoral heart and collaborative spirit
