Title: Judaic Studies Teacher (Full-Time)

Reports to: Rosh Beit Midrash

Position Summary

The NYHS Judaic Studies Teacher is responsible for delivering rigorous, engaging, and values-driven instruction in Judaic Studies to high school students. This role supports students’ intellectual, spiritual, and ethical development by fostering deep textual skills, critical thinking, and a meaningful connection to Jewish tradition, culture, and community. The ideal candidate is a passionate educator who models lifelong Jewish learning and contributes positively to a collaborative school environment rooted in tradition and excellence.

Core Responsibilities

Instruction & Curriculum

  • Teach Judaic Studies courses, which may include Tanakh, Talmud, Halacha, Jewish History, Jewish Thought, Hebrew Language, and/or Jewish Ethics, based on school needs and candidate expertise.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with the school’s Judaic Studies curriculum and educational philosophy.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning styles, academic levels, and student backgrounds.
  • Integrate traditional texts with contemporary perspectives to make learning relevant and meaningful.
  • Utilize a range of instructional strategies, including chavruta learning, discussion-based instruction, project-based learning, and formative assessment.

Student Development & Engagement

  • Foster a classroom culture of respect, curiosity, and active participation.
  • Support students’ growth as thoughtful, ethical, and engaged members of the Jewish community.
  • Serve as a mentor and role model, reinforcing Jewish values (middot) and positive character development.
  • Provide timely feedback and maintain accurate academic records.



Community & School Life

  • Participate in school-wide programming, including tefillah, assemblies, Shabbat and holiday programming, and experiential learning activities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across Judaic and General Studies departments.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents, and administrators.
  • Attend faculty meetings, professional development sessions, and school events as required.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Judaic Studies, Jewish Education, Hebrew, or a related field.
  • Strong content knowledge in Judaic Studies and classical Jewish texts.
  • High level of Hebrew literacy (commensurate with teaching assignment).
  • Demonstrated commitment to Jewish education and communal life.
  • Ability to work effectively in a pluralistic Jewish environment.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in Jewish Education, Judaic Studies, or a related discipline.
  • High school teaching experience.
  • Teaching certification or eligibility for certification.
  • Experience with differentiated instruction and student-centered pedagogy.
  • Familiarity with educational technology and learning management systems.

Benefits

  • Full-time employees and part-time employees working 0.5 FTE or greater are eligible for school-paid medical and vision insurance, with the option to enroll in employee-paid dental coverage and a flexible spending account. Employees may also elect to add dependent coverage at their own expense.

  • Generous time off including many federal and Jewish holidays.

Salary

  • Salary Range $50,000 to $75,000 (Based on experience and FTE)
