Assistant Education Director

Summary: The Assistant Education Director at CBI supports the Director of Youth Education and Engagement in implementing and overseeing youth educational curriculum. This role is also instrumental in coordinating the logistics of b’nei mitzvah with families. This position requires a non-traditional work schedule, such as working evenings and weekends as necessary.

About Us: Congregation Beth Israel, founded in 1876, is Austin's oldest and largest synagogue. Our mission is to foster a thriving Jewish community by embracing spirituality, learning, and a sense of belonging. Each year, our religious school serves over 250 students and approximately 20 students become b’nei mitzvah.

 

Youth Education Responsibilities

Work closely with the Director of Youth Education & Engagement to fulfill the vision for the school as a whole. 

  • Promote the CBI education and youth programs to prospective members.
  • Support teachers and substitutes with preparations of materials for classes.
  • Supervise and train teen employees and volunteers (madrichol).
  • Assist Director in planning and facilitating teacher and teen orientations, trainings, and meetings.
  • Plan and implement monthly holiday or service projects for Mishpacha Moments, a family engagement group for K-2nd
  • Facilitate the online Hebrew program on Zoom on Wednesday evenings.
  • Provide administrative support for all Religious school special events, such as, but not limited to Consecration and Confirmation.

 

Record Keeping

  • Manage youth education registration, from updating the form to placing registered students in classes, both in Shulcloud, and in rosters on Google Drive.
  • Appropriately manage confidential information such as information about student needs and allergies.
  • Along with the Director, manage book and supply orders and keep records of receipts and invoices.
  • Record donations made to school funds during registration.
  • Coordinate Hebrew school pizza sales and manage funds.
  • Manage and organize rosters, lesson plans, and materials in workroom.

 

 

B’nei Mitzvah Coordination

Work closely with the Director of Education and Clergy team in fulfilling the vision of our b’nei mitzvah program. 

  • Coordinate with professional staff the dates available for b’nei mitzvah celebrations in upcoming years. 
  • Prepare survey for b’nei mitzvah date selection. 
  • Prepare list of students/families to receive b’nei mitzvah date selection survey.
  • Calendar b’nei mitzvah celebrations as a result of the survey. 
  • Communicate with parents when first choices or conflicts arise while scheduling dates. 
  • Prepare a Google Drive Folder for each student with volunteer and service log sheets. Email this to families 18 months before their date with a letter informing them of their upcoming commitments
  • Email families 13 months out from their day to make an appointment for a 12-month meeting to review expectations with parents and evaluate the student’s Hebrew. 
  • Work directly with b’nei mitzvah tutors, to discuss student’s progress and when to make special accommodations for different learning styles and determine, with advice from the clergy, what those accommodations should be. 

 

General Responsibilities

  • Respond to Education Office emails and phone calls in a timely manner.
  • Communicate with Operations team to keep all departments updated on the education and youth calendars and programs.
  • Communicate with facilities staff about room set up, clean-up and other facility needs.
  • Teach, lead and substitute in education and engagement programs, as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workroom.
  • Other duties as assigned or required to ensure the smooth running of the Youth Education and Engagement programs.

Qualifications

  • Identify as Jewish
  • College degree
  • Experience with religious education and/or informal Jewish youth settings
  • Hebrew reading skills
  • Knowledge of Jewish practices, holidays, and values
  • Proficiency with Microsoft, Google Suites and Zoom and ability to learn new digital programs

 

Reporting and Supervision: Director of Youth Education and Engagement

Position Available: August 2026

Compensation: $58,000-$62,000
