The Director of Congregational Engagement works closely with clergy, professional staff, and lay leadership to strengthen relationships, design engaging programs, support volunteers, and lead membership renewal and stewardship efforts.
The ideal candidate is both a strong people person and an effective systems thinker—comfortable greeting members at the door, following up with prospective families, organizing programs, collaborating with committees, managing data, and using technology to support thoughtful decision-making.
Rabbinic candidates with relevant experience are welcome to apply.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary point of contact for new and prospective members and ensure a warm, personal onboarding experience
- Build and sustain meaningful relationships with members across all stages of synagogue life
- Design, implement, and evaluate engagement-focused programs for diverse populations (families, seniors, young adults, interfaith households, etc.)
- Recruit, support, and steward volunteers and serve as staff liaison to assigned committees
- Lead the annual membership renewal process, including personalized outreach and stewardship
- Cultivate sponsorships and member support for programs and events
- Maintain accurate membership records and detailed CRM notes; ensure timely follow-up on member interactions
- Prepare reports and analyze trends related to engagement, participation, and membership
- Collaborate closely with clergy and staff across education, ritual, youth, and community programming
- Participate in synagogue-wide events, including select Shabbatot and Jewish holidays
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years of experience in membership, engagement, community organizing, event planning, or a related field
(Rabbinic ordination or rabbinic training may be considered in lieu of some professional experience)
- Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills; warm, approachable, and community-oriented
- Native-level or near-native proficiency in spoken and written English, with the ability to communicate clearly and confidently in a public-facing role
- Strong technical and database skills, including comfort managing CRM systems, maintaining data accuracy, generating reports, and learning new digital tools quickly (ShulCloud a plus)
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Fast learner who adapts well to new systems, processes, and priorities
- Team player who collaborates effectively with colleagues, clergy, and lay leadership
- Jewish literacy and comfort with Jewish holidays, rituals, and lifecycle events
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and Jewish holidays as needed
