Congregation Mishkan Or is a vibrant Reform Jewish temple in Beachwood, Ohio—“Dwelling Place of Light.” With approximately 1,800 households, we are a warm and welcoming community rooted in tradition, connection, and lifelong Jewish learning.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a collaborative and strategic leader who is passionate about Jewish communal life and nonprofit leadership. This individual brings strong operational and financial acumen, HR/team building/Staff Leadership skills, sound judgment, and the ability to engage diverse stakeholders while driving the organization forward.  Relocation assistance will be considered.

Position Overview

Congregation Mishkan Or seeks a collaborative and strategic Executive Director to serve as its chief administrative and operational leader for a staff of 29 and a budget of approximately $7 million.

This individual will oversee all aspects of day-to-day operations and partner closely with clergy and lay leadership to execute the strategic vision established by the Board of Directors.

The Executive Director will lead key functional areas including:

  • Finance
  • Human Resources
  • Facilities & Security
  • Membership & Engagement
  • Communications
  • School and Cemetery Operations

Key Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership & Operations

  • Oversee daily operations across all administrative and program areas
  • Partner closely with clergy leadership, including the Senior Rabbi
  • Lead and develop administrative, program, and facilities staff to work as a team.
  • Ensure efficient systems, processes, and internal communications
  • Oversee campus operations, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment

Strategic Leadership & Governance

  • Implement the organization’s strategic plan in partnership with the Board and clergy
  • Serve as a key liaison to the Board of Directors
  • Support strong governance practices and organizational alignment

Financial Management

  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting
  • Ensure financial transparency and long-term sustainability
  • Monitor revenue streams, including dues, tuition, and fundraising

Development & Membership

  • Support fundraising strategies, donor engagement, and campaigns
  • Drive membership growth, retention, and engagement
  • Build strong relationships with congregants and community stakeholders

Human Resources & Staff Leadership

  • Recruit, develop, and retain high-performing staff
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and growth
  • Oversee performance management and staff development

Community Engagement & Communications

  • Serve as a visible leader within the congregation and broader community
  • Oversee internal and external communications
  • Represent the organization in partnerships and public initiatives

Facilities, Risk & Compliance

  • Oversee facilities, capital improvements, and vendor relationships
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws and safety standards
  • Manage risk, insurance, and security planning

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • 5–10+ years of senior leadership experience (nonprofit or community-based preferred)
  • Strong financial, operational, and staff leadership experience
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and project management abilities
  • Knowledge of Jewish communal life preferred

Work Environment

  • Onsite leadership presence required
  • Participation in evenings, weekends, and key community events
  • Fast-paced, mission-driven environment with multiple priorities
