High Holiday Cantorial Soloist

Congregation Adath Israel, a conservative synagogue in Middletown CT, is seeking a Cantorial Soloist for the High Holidays.

Key Responsibilities:

• Musical leadership: Provide musical direction for High Holy Day services, including Rosh Hashanah evenings and mornings, Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur.
• Collaboration: Work closely with the Rabbi and lay leaders to create meaningful worship experiences.  This includes attending planning meetings and rehearsals as needed.
• Engagement: Foster a welcoming and spiritual atmosphere, encouraging congregational participation in song and prayer.
• Preparation: Be available to prepare worship with the Rabbi in the weeks leading up to the High Holidays, ensuring familiarity with the liturgy and music.
• Performance: Lead and perform solo pieces, as well as guide the congregation in communal prayers, ensuring a warm, participatory and inviting service.

Qualifications:

• Musical Proficiency: Strong vocal ability and musical talent, with experience in both traditional and contemporary Jewish prayers.
• Knowledge of Liturgy: Familiarity with High Holiday liturgy and the ability to recite or chant Hebrew passages fluently.
• Experience: Prior experience leading synagogue services is preferred, though formal ordination is not required.
• Collaborative spirit: Ability to work well with clergy, staff and lay leaders, demonstrating flexibility and reliability.
• Positive Attitude: A welcoming, joyful and positive demeanor that enhances the worship experience for all congregants.

• Position Start Date: Typically begins in the lead-up to the High Holidays.
• Salary: Flexible and based on experience as well as the portions of services led, with reasonable travel and lodging covered.
