Assistant Director, Religious School & Family Engagement

We are searching for a full-time, highly organized, educational entrepreneur to help create a welcoming, positive, and engaging atmosphere for our Religious School community and temple families. TIOH’s Religious School and youth groups serve over 300 children through weekly classes, Shabbat and holidays, community service, retreats, and fun social events that nurture a cohesive community and foster Jewish spirituality and identity. The Assistant Director is supervised by the Director of Religious School & Family Engagement, and works in cooperation with the temple’s clergy, program staff, and lay leadership.

Our community is composed of 900 households and is home to three vibrant schools – Religious School/Teen Program, Bay-Nimoy Early Childhood Center, and Briskin Elementary School.
Religious School and Youth Programming Responsibilities:
- Serve as a resource for teachers for curriculum, lesson planning, classroom management, and general support
- Design and lead creative, meaningful, and age-appropriate social programming for two
TIOH youth groups: Club Noar (K-2 grade) and Club 345 (3-5 grade)
- Create and coordinate meaningful family learning days in collaboration with the Director
- Coordinate student participation in weekly Religious School T’fillah
- Coordinate family field trips, off-site experiences and volunteer opportunities for grades
PreK-6, in collaboration with the Director and Operations Manager
- Assist in the planning, organizing, and implementation of 4-6 Grade Retreat and Shul-In
- In collaboration with the Director, plan and execute social justice initiatives
- Hire, direct, and train youth leaders, retreat counselors and any other program staff as needed
Shabbat and Holiday Programming Responsibilities:
- Design and implement youth High Holy Day programming, including program design and implementation, staffing, coordination of logistics with the Operations Manager
- Plan and lead TIOH Purim Carnival
- Work with Director and Communications Manager to create promotional materials, flyers and swag for events and programming
- In collaboration with the Director, organize and facilitate special Shabbat and holiday programs, including Family Selichot and other community-wide events.
Operations and Administrative Support:
- Assist Director with the daily operation of school and programs
- Co-lead carpool on Sundays and Wednesdays, ensuring smooth operations and positive engagement with families
- Address student attendance concerns in partnership with the RS Operations Manager
- Support classroom teachers with student discipline
- Continuously evaluate and actualize ways to expand enrollment and active participation in the number of children and families at TIOH in partnership with the Religious School Director
- Support and assist the Director, Operations Manager, and Teen Engagement professional as an integral teammate
- Attend key Religious School and temple events, Shabbat services, High Holy Day programming, and Holiday celebrations to maintain a visible and supportive presence for students, role-modeling a Jewish lifestyle
- Act as a concierge of Jewish youth programming and opportunities to our families and help them access our religious school programs, Jewish summer camp, travel opportunities and other community projects
- Partner with the Director to identify students who have disengaged and create pathways to reconnect them
- Commitment to supporting the mission and values of TIOH and the Religious School
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required; a degree in Jewish Education or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in Jewish education, and 3+ years in staff management.
- Familiarity with Jewish holidays, synagogue life, and community dynamics
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, educational technology (Zoom, Kahoot, etc.), and CRM services (e.g., Blackbaud).
- Familiarity with Canva
- Familiarity with Hebrew language, including, reading, writing and speaking.
- Availability during religious school hours, which include evenings and weekends, as well as High Holidays and other major Jewish holidays.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a "figure-it-out" attitude
- Prior experience in education, youth programming, or religious school environments strongly preferred
Work Requirements:
- Work from our campus at 7300 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles
- Full time exempt status; primary work week will be Sunday - Thursday
- Must be able to travel as needed for events and retreats
Salary & Benefits:
- Salary $72,000 – 80,000 commensurate with experience
