Temple Emanuel, an egalitarian congregation with over 1,500 member units affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, is seeking a highly organized person for the position of Financial Controller. The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or MBA preferred).  At least 5+ years of experience in progressive financial management or accounting, ideally within a nonprofit environment, this role requires managerial experience, and someone who desires the opportunity to make an impact both socially as well as internally by revamping current processes.

 

The Controller will play a crucial role in sustaining the financial well-being of the organization. This individual will oversee accounting functions, financial reporting, budgeting, and audits, ensuring accuracy and transparency. The Controller will collaborate with leadership, including the Executive Director, Finance Committee, and Board of Directors, to inform decision-making and drive long-term financial sustainability.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage four staff who support the Controller in managing accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and reconciliations.
  • Prepare for annual audits
  • Monitor budget performance against actual expenditures and partner with department leaders to maintain fiscal discipline.
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit financial regulations, grant reporting requirements, and tax obligations.

 

  • Generate financial forecast and reporting and analysis to support strategic initiatives comprehensive financial documentation.
  • Engage with the Finance Committee to provide financial oversight and governance.
  • Oversee payroll processing
  • Provide financial oversight for capital campaigns and special projects.
  • Prepare and review financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports.
  • Lead the organization’s annual budget development in collaboration with the Executive Director and Finance & Operations and Budget Committee.
  • Oversee cash flow management and investment accounts.
  • Improve and optimize accounting systems to enhance financial efficiency.
  • Analyze financial trends and recommend appropriate corrective measures as needed.
  • Accounting software and ACH implementations

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or MBA preferred).
  • At least 5+ years of experience in progressive financial management or accounting, ideally within a nonprofit environment.
  • Deep understanding of GAAP, nonprofit financial regulations, and compliance standards.
  • Experience with MIP general ledger (or comparable accounting software) and donor management systems.
  • System implementation experience
