Position Summary

The Director of Finance & Operations is a key member of the Senior Administrative Team, reporting directly to the Head of School. This role provides strategic leadership and oversight of the school’s financial and operational functions, ensuring long-term sustainability and alignment with the school’s mission.

The Director works closely with school leadership, faculty, families, Board members, and external partners, serving as a trusted advisor on financial strategy, operational excellence, and organizational planning.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Strategy

  • Provide strategic financial leadership in partnership with the Head of School and Board of Trustees
  • Oversee all business office functions, including budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting
  • Develop and maintain short- and long-term financial models
  • Establish financial and capital strategies aligned with institutional priorities
  • Manage relationships with banks, lenders, and financial institutions
  • Ensure compliance with all financial reporting requirements
  • Oversee the Tuition Assistance Program
  • Partner with Admissions and Development on revenue strategy

Operations & Administration

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the business office
  • Supervise the Office Manager to ensure smooth front office operations
  • Provide oversight of facilities, maintenance, and capital improvements
  • Support campus master planning and operational efficiency initiatives

Human Resources

  • Oversee payroll, benefits administration, and employee programs
  • Partner with the Head of School on hiring, compensation, and salary benchmarking
  • Prepare employment agreements and maintain employee records
  • Ensure compliance with HR policies and employment regulations

Risk Management & Compliance

  • Manage insurance programs (property, liability, health, workers’ compensation, etc.)
  • Ensure appropriate risk mitigation strategies are in place
  • Stay current with federal, state, and local regulations
  • Partner with legal counsel on institutional matters

Strategic Partnership

  • Serve as a thought partner to the Head of School on strategic initiatives
  • Support development of faculty and parent handbooks
  • Collaborate with Board committees and present financial updates
  • Coordinate special projects and reporting (e.g., CAIS, Cal-ISBOA)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred)
  • FACTS Management Software preferred
  • 3+ years of leadership experience in finance and operations
  • Experience in independent schools or nonprofit organizations strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise in budgeting, financial modeling, and reporting
  • Knowledge of HR practices, employment law, and benefits administration
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a collaborative environment
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Jewish education
