Director of Membership & Life Experiences

Introduction

For more than 100 years, B’nai Israel Congregation has been a mainstay of Jewish life and community service in the Greater Washington area. The position of Director of Membership and Life Experiences was created as part of a larger centennial celebration that aims to honor our history while establishing new ways to serve our members and expand Jewish life. This is a newly created senior leadership role designed to reimagine how our congregation engages members across the full lifecycle. Success in this role will directly shape the future growth and retention of our community.

The position aims to advance three institutional goals:

  1. Recognizing the member experience as a lifecycle, we want to better respond to moments of life transition (i.e. from pre-school to elementary school, post B’nai Mitzvah celebration, transition to the “empty-nest,” and other life events) as opportunities for engagement.
  2. As many of our member (and their parents) age, we want to better address questions that accompany a general desire to “age in place.”
  3. Understanding Jewish values and community as a source of personal growth and improvement, we want to help members to be the best version of themselves by offering guidance in parenting, achieving mental wellness, supporting aging parents, and guiding our families through life’s various stages.

Qualified Candidates will meet all or most of these criteria:

  • Master of Social Work or equivalent
  • At least five years of experience in Jewish communal service and/or clinical settings
  • Excellent Communication skills (writing, communication with members, listening and counseling)
  • Strong executive function and organizational skills (ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities at once and to navigate a complex organization with multiple departments)
  • Experience with Customer Relationship Management software and systems
  • The ideal candidate is a relationship-builder who is equally comfortable providing pastoral support, designing systems, and driving institutional change. They are proactive, empathetic, and able to navigate complexity with discretion and professionalism

Job Responsibilities:

  • Create and manage a membership recruitment database to track prospective member inquiries
  • Meet with each new member to onboard and direct them on a membership path that works for them. Share information with clergy and department heads as appropriate.
  • Design CRM system for important congregational “touch points” using our existing database (ShulCloud)
  • Serve as a counseling resource for congregants
    • Develop relationships with key community organizations and referral lists to direct people to therapy and other community resources as appropriate.
    • Suggest pastoral counseling and make connections with our clergy as appropriate
    • Advise members regarding available social services (i.e. aging in place, housing resources, therapy services, etc.)
  • Serve as lead staff liaison to Caring Committee and Membership Committee
  • Serve as a resource to other committees (Inclusion Committee, Belonging Committee, etc.) as appropriate
  • Bring together disparate elements of our synagogue (i.e. “silos”) to strengthen a culture of cross-cultural collaboration for staff and members alike.
  • Direct semi-annual new member events and other events as appropriate.
  • Create programming to address mental wellness and other social service needs as appropriate
  • This role reports to the Executive Director and works closely with clergy and senior staff
  • B’nai Israel is a collaborative, mission-driven workplace that values innovation, professional growth, and a strong sense of community among staff
