Congregation Eitz Chayim, a vibrant independent synagogue in Cambridge, seeks a cantor for the 5787 High Holy Days (Fall 2026).
About Us
We're a creative, spiritually alive community of 110+ families doing something special—an intimate congregation where innovation meets tradition. Our beautiful sanctuary feels like a giant living room complete with murals and clerestory windows, and we're cultivating a dynamic musical culture that honors nusach while embracing contemporary melodies and contemplative practice.
The Role
Alongside our rabbi, lead musical prayer for:
- Rosh Hashanah: Erev service and first day morning
- Yom Kippur: Kol Nidre, morning service, and Neilah
- Teach one class or lead a supplementary program on Yom Kippur afternoon (preferred but not required)
- Help gabbai and run Torah services
Our davening style is an eclectic blend—nusach, contemporary melodies, beloved classics—mostly a cappella with occasional instrumental accompaniment. Services are warmly participatory and full of heart. You'll be harmonizing with Rabbi Chloe Zelkha, an experienced musician.
What We're Looking For
- Strong chazanut skills with comfort co-leading Torah service
- Ability to play cajon or guitar sometimes (preferred but not required)
- Someone seeking continuity—ideally Boston-area based with interest in returning multiple years
- A collaborative spirit who can help us deepen our musical spiritual life
Bonus (Optional) Opportunities
- Feel free to join us for a beautiful musical Selichot service before Rosh Hashanah
- Complimentary attendance at a day-long Rosh Hashanah Day II meditation retreat
Compensation: $4,500 (+ a free high holiday ticket for a partner, friend, or family member)
