Education Director

The Director of Education serves as the central driver and owner of KHN’s multi-generational educational programs, working in close partnership with the Rabbi, teachers, and dedicated volunteers. While volunteers remain essential to KHN’s culture, this role provides the professional leadership needed to ensure continuity, quality, and momentum.

This is a part-time role of roughly 20 hours with flexible scheduling and some remote work. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Key Responsibilities

Educational Vision & Leadership

• Provide leadership and oversight for all KHN educational programming. 
• Serve as the primary owner of educational outcomes, quality, and engagement. 
• Partner closely with the Rabbi to ensure alignment with congregational values, Reconstructionist practice, and ritual life.
• Collaborate with the Education Committee, Board, and relevant committees (Youth & Adult Education, Ritual, Communications).

Shul School & Family Education

• Oversee KHN’s Shul School (currently under 25 children), including calendar planning, curriculum direction, and program design.  Currently meeting twice a month.

• Supervise and support paid and volunteer teachers, including scheduling and compliance requirements.

• Coordinate family learning experiences, including:

  • Shul School–led Kabbalat Shabbat services

  • Family Shabbat dinners

  • Holiday programming (High Holidays, Sukkot, Hanukkah, Purim, etc.)

• Ensure programming is engaging, experiential, and developmentally appropriate, incorporating art, music, movement, and hands-on learning.

• Identify and manage supplemental arts, music, and culinary programming within budget.

 Early Childhood (Tots & Kids)

• Oversee and coordinate the Tots & Kids program as a primary entry point for young families.
• Plan and support monthly services and family programming in partnership with volunteers and the Rabbi.

Teen & Post–B’nei Mitzvah Engagement

• Lead teen and post–B’nei Mitzvah engagement, including exploration of confirmation or teen learning models.

• Support teens as madrichim (teacher aides).

• Coordinate with the Rabbi and connect families to Reconstructionist-aligned and regional youth programs and camps.

Adult Education & Lifelong Learning

• Provide leadership for adult education and cultivate a culture of lifelong learning.

• Coordinate and/or develop offerings such as:

  • Member-led and facilitator-led classes

  • Collaborative programs with partner organizations

  • Cultural outings and special learning events

• Recruit and support volunteer teachers and paid facilitators.

Administration & Communication

• Manage educational calendars in coordination with clergy and committees.

• Maintain proactive communication with families and participants.

• Coordinate logistics, materials, space setup, and program operations.

• Ensure compliance with safety protocols, background checks, and required documentation.

• Prepare monthly Board reports and attend Board and committee meetings as needed.

• Partner with the Communications Committee to promote educational offerings and keep the website up to date.

Qualifications

Required / Strongly Preferred

• Alignment with a progressive, liberal Jewish community and familiarity with Reconstructionist congregational culture.

• Experience teaching or facilitating learning for children.

• Strong organizational, project management, and communication skills.

• Warm, relational approach to families, staff, and volunteers.

• Knowledge of Jewish ritual and holidays.

• Ability to supervise staff and coordinate volunteers.

• Collaborative working style.

Desired

• Experience in Jewish education or congregational education leadership.

• Creativity and joy (ruach) for Jewish learning and community-building.

• Experience across multiple age groups (early childhood through adults).

• Experience with experiential education.

• Prior involvement with a Jewish congregation.

Position Details

• Hours: Approximately 20 hours/week during the program year (September–May); summer hours are lighter and may be largely remote.

• Compensation: Competitive and commensurate with experience, ranging from $30,000-$40,000

• Benefits: To be determined based employment structure; PTO provided.
