Synagogue Overview:

Temple Beth Hillel-Beth El is a welcoming and inclusive Conservative synagogue located in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. We are dedicated to enriching Jewish life, traditions, and values. Our diverse, multi-generational community fosters meaningful connections through prayer, learning, tikkun olam (improving the world), and mitzvot (religious commandments). Our four strategic goals – Beit Midrash/Education, Beit Tefillah/Prayer, Beit Knesset/Community, and Bayit/House – continue to be the foundations of our synagogue. Our schools have been recognized for their excellence and innovation. Our staff and lay leaders have been recognized locally and nationally for their creativity and quality. At TBH-BE we strive to advance and strengthen Jewish observance and values; foster a love of learning and positive Jewish identities; instill a sense of responsibility to the Jewish people, Israel, and the local and global community; and promote warm and caring friendships among our members. TBH-BE is a synagogue with approximately 790 families and offers a thriving, Early Childhood Center,  Religious School and Summer Camp.

Position Overview:

The Chief Administrative Director of Temple Beth Hillel – Beth El is responsible for the administrative performance of the synagogue. The position works closely with the Executive Director, clergy, President of the Board of Directors, and other senior staff and lay leadership to create a warm, caring, and vibrant environment for our members to engage fully in the many opportunities provided at the synagogue. This position reports to the Executive Director, is considered a part of the Senior Staff, and will manage multiple staff and partner closely with lay leaders. 

The ideal candidate will be strategic, innovative, accountable, adept at prioritizing, and committed to creating sustainable systems that enable the synagogue to run efficiently and effectively. We seek a leader with exceptional organization leadership and people management skills who brings experience running a Jewish organization with a budget of close to $6M. The successful candidate will be instrumental in translating the synagogue’s strategy into reality, helping the synagogue grow from where it is today to where it will be in the future. The Chief Administrative Director will focus on operational effectiveness, office management, financial management, facilities and security, and governance. This role will also be responsible for Human Resources and Talent Management processes, including employee relations. An understanding of complex organizations with multiple P&L departments, and community centers with complex building usage is desired. A focus on continuous improvement, process excellence, innovating, collaborating, managing, and leading is a must.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Operational Excellence

  • Translate vision and strategic priorities into predictable, high-quality execution of synagogue operations, balancing mission, finances, staff capacity, and congregant experience for both effectiveness and efficiency
  • Establish centralized systems, processes, and standard operating procedures to simplify synagogue operations and bring efficiencies, including application of automation as appropriate
  • Support Executive Director and team by managing bird’s-eye view of synagogue operations at any time, including calendar, resources, financials, security, and staffing; identify, plan for, and respond to needs across the office
  • Take responsibility for communicating information across the team and coordinating cross-departmental efforts
  • Lead implementation of administrative pieces of strategic plan and support future strategic planning activities
  • Lead technology and data utilization in a responsible and sustainable manner to benefit synagogue goals and maximize resources, financials, communications, scheduling, schools, and other areas
  • Manage synagogue security with appropriate audits and reviews, planning, and implementation to foster community safety and operational continuity

Financial Stewardship & Business Acumen

  • Act as financial lead and serve as steward of financial health, guiding the organization to position of financial strength, through budget development and implementation, and financial management
  • Manage financials software and systems, including internal controls and process flows
  • Supervise Bookkeeper to implement and execute effective processes that enable financial health and transparency
  • Advise on membership economics (dues, fees, etc.) and tuition-based revenue models to benefit synagogue’s financial health
  • Coordinate vendor management and contract negotiation for efficiency and accuracy, to achieve synagogue goals
  • Coordinate with Development leader to position and process donations and coordinate endowment and other funds

Talent Management

  • Help build and retain a high-performing, mission-driven staff through a combination of staff supervision, HR management, training, and feedback
  • Manage benefits program with focus on employee respect and financial health of the synagogue. Responsible for compensation and benefits benchmarking and maintenance of salary structures
  • Coordinate annual goal setting and performance management processes with Executive Director
  • Lead a compelling and relevant professional development program and training activities for office team in response to evolving needs and results of individual performance management
  • Conduct conflict resolution and lead difficult conversations to prevent issues or deescalate them as soon as they arise
  • Lead internal communications and collaboration models across the organization. Includes information management such as share files
  • Foster a culture of respect, human dignity, accountability, communications, and trust

Facilities

  • Responsible for Facilities processes and coordination to benefit synagogue operations and programming
  • Manage Facilities leader and advise Facilities team for efficiency and effectiveness
  • Act as Office Manager, managing and coordinating needs across the physical space related to facilities, maintenance, security, goods and materials, room layouts, wear and tear, and usage
  • Work closely with directors of preschool, religious school, programming, membership, etc. to coordinate building usage, including various programs happening concurrently
  • Manage the tracking of inventory including amounts, conditions and locations, for ease of access and use
  • Guide decisions related to vendors and contracts

Security

  • Manage security team, including contract with external vendor; coordinate security team attendance and performance
  • Manage and coordinate any security audits and implementation of findings, as agreed upon by synagogue leadership
  • Identify and implement leading security practices by coordinating with security experts and presenting options to Executive Director and other synagogue stakeholders
