Description

Who We Are: Congregation Eitz Chayim is an independent, pluralistic synagogue in Cambridge, MA—spiritually alive, creative, and deeply connected. Our High Holy Day children's programming is joyful, substantive, and designed to make the holidays meaningful for kids of all ages.

The Role: We're hiring two teachers to lead our children's programming and childcare on Rosh Hashanah (Saturday, September 12) and Yom Kippur (Monday, September 21). This is a chance to create memorable, engaging Jewish experiences for kids at one of the most significant moments of the Jewish year—and to allow their parents to get to pray in community!

The Two Roles:

Littles Teacher (potty-trained through age 6): Lead art-making, storytelling, and movement for our youngest participants. Kids will create set pieces for a Jonah play, learn their parts, and discover the story of Jonah in age-appropriate, playful ways.

Middles Teacher (ages 7–13): Lead a more educational experience for older kids—exploring the meaning of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, as well as preparing for and running a Jonah play.

Schedule (Both Days):

  • 8:00am: Arrive for setup and any material prep
  • 9:00–9:30am: Attend children's service with Rabbi Zelkha
  • 9:30am: Lead children to classrooms and begin programming
  • 10:00am: Snack break
  • 11:30am: Kid-friendly lunch
  • 12:00pm: Send ozrim (teen helpers) join sanctuary for Torah service
  • 12:30pm: Bring all kids to sanctuary for Shofar service
  • Through 3:00pm: Cleanup and wrap-up

Who You Are:

  • Experienced working with children in Jewish educational or communal settings
  • Warm, organized, and able to hold a room with energy and care
  • Comfortable leading both structured learning and creative, playful activities
  • Familiar with High Holy Day themes and the story of Jonah (or excited to dig in!)
  • A team player who communicates clearly and follows through

Compensation: $350 per day ($50/hour, 7-hour day), for a total of $700 for both holidays combined.
