Chizuk Amuno Congregation, Schools, and Camp (“Chizuk Amuno”) is a leading, progressive, egalitarian and inclusive Jewish Conservative institution serving a vibrant community in suburban Baltimore, Maryland. Founded in 1871 and led by exceptional clergy, educators and engaged lay leadership, we are committed to spiritual, educational, and communal excellence. The Executive Director is a key senior leader, responsible for financial, operational, facilities, administrative, and human resource oversight, ensuring the sustained vitality of the congregation, its schools, and programs.

Position Summary

The Executive Director is a senior leader, reporting to the President of the Board of Trustees and partnering closely with senior clergy, school leadership, and lay leaders. This highly visible role blends strategic vision with hands-on management, shaping culture, leveraging institutional strengths, guiding through challenges, and fueling the growth of a warm and dynamic 21st-century synagogue and school community.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy

• Collaborate with the Senior Rabbi, senior staff, and Board of Trustees to advance strategic goals and operational excellence.
• Provide management oversight and foster professional development of administrative, operations, HR, institutional advancement and marketing, ensuring mission alignment and financial sustainability.
• Develop and implement strategic and operational plans, optimizing communication and resource sharing across the institution.
• Build strong relationships with lay leadership, committees, and affiliated organizations.

Financial Management

• Oversee all accounting, budgeting, payroll, financial reporting, and cash flow, in partnership with Treasurer, Finance Committees, and vendors.
• Lead collaborative development of annual/multi-year budgets, manage expenditures and credit, and conduct financial analysis for informed decision-making.
• Identify cost-saving opportunities and ensure financial sustainability.
• Manage sensitive financial data, including foundation, investments, and fundraising information.
• Oversee fundraising strategy, including annual campaigns, endowment, planned giving, grant writing, and special projects.

Operations, Administration & Communications

• Direct daily operations, administration, technology, and communications, ensuring a professional image and alignment with brand and mission.
• Ensure effective use of management software and office systems.
• Lead recruitment, performance management, and staff development in partnership with HR, consulting with legal counsel as needed.

Facilities & Security Management

• Ensure safe, well-maintained, and secure facilities, overseeing maintenance, security, food service, catering, and cemeteries. Identify opportunities for capital improvements.
• Manage building use, rentals, contracts, and serve as liaison to security professionals and relevant committees.

Congregational/School Relations & Membership

• Build strong relationships throughout the congregation, schools and affiliated groups to support membership growth and satisfaction.
• Be visible at key events and synagogue services; respond thoughtfully and promptly to member questions, promoting a culture of warmth and inclusion.
• Support and evaluate programs and events; advise and assist the Membership Committee.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred.
• Minimum of 10 years leadership experience, in a synagogue or Jewish nonprofit a plus.
• Proven expertise in financial oversight, budget development, implementation, management, and measurement of ROI.
• Strong operational, project management, and leadership skills, with experience in staff development and organizational strategy.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; ability to build consensus and nurture relationships.
• Advanced technology skills (Google Drive, Microsoft Office, databases, web-based communications; ShulCloud a plus).
• Demonstrated experience and understanding of fundraising and donor relations.
• Familiarity with Conservative Jewish values, day schools and synagogue life a plus.
• Effective in fast-paced environments; strategic, adaptable, goal-oriented, resilient, and calm under pressure.
