Cantor/Musically-Accomplished Rabbi

Congregation Beth El of the Sudbury River Valley

Congregation Beth El  in Sudbury, MA, seeks an innovative, musically-talented Cantor/Spiritual Leader to partner with our full-time rabbi and lay leadership to conduct  weekly and holiday services  and  enhance all other aspects of our Jewish ritual life.

This full-time position will begin July 2023.

We are a pluralistic community that delights in our spiritually eclectic approach to Judaism.  Our davening integrates traditional Hebrew liturgy, broad cantorial influences, meditative chanting, elements of Reform music, principles of Jewish Renewal and  original compositions from community members.  Our commitment to Jewish authenticity and scholarship is reflected in our minhag of having congregants read Torah every Shabbat. Congregants grapple with the week’s Parasha in four simultaneous Torah study hevras in the building and on Zoom every Shabbat.

Deeply committed to social justice and inclusivity, we are proud to have published the first gender-neutral siddur in 1975. Furthermore, Beth El clergy were officiating at same sex commitment ceremonies for more than a decade before gay marriage was made legal in Massachusetts.

Twenty miles west of Boston, we are a 220-household congregation that attracts a dedicated membership from the Metrowest suburbs, urban locales in and around Boston, as well as rural towns of Central Massachusetts.  We joyfully welcome active participation of Jews of all backgrounds and abilities, interfaith households, and those exploring whether to become Jewish.

Known for  enthusiastic singing, commitment to learning, spiritual seeking, and determined activism, Beth El is  dedicated to Torah, Israel, community service, anti-racism, and tikkun olam. Please consider applying if you share in the values named in our vision statement below and recognize ways in which your presence as a spiritual leader will help us more fully embody these ideals:  Congregation Beth El is joyful, participatory Judaism.  We sing, learn, laugh, and pray together, and celebrate our varied backgrounds, identities, and experiences. We connect with Jewish values and traditions as we strive to create a more just future for ourselves, our children, and our world.

We encourage you to visit our website (bethelsudbury.org) to learn more about our community.

The cantor we seek transmits their appreciation and knowledge of Jewish liturgy, ritual, song, and study.  This spiritual leader is excited by the prospect of bringing Judaism  to the next generation through music and other opportunities for engagement.  The right candidate will excel at guiding an actively participating congregation– recognizing and appreciating that at Beth El Sudbury, the role of cantor or prayer leader is integrative rather than performative. Your leadership skills include a facility for connecting well with others and helping others find connection with Judaism and with the Beth El community.

We are eager to get to know your specific passions and how you will use them to help us deepen our Jewish experience, individually and collectively. We look forward to the creativity with which you will invigorate our dedicated community.
