About Us

Beth El Synagogue is a warm, inclusive, and engaged Conservative synagogue located in the heart of Durham near Duke's East Campus.  Our congregation is dedicated to meaningful Jewish Life, prayer, education, and community.  We are seeking a reliable, organized, and personable Administrative Assistant to support our daily operations and ensure a welcoming experience for congregants and visitors.

 

Position Overview

The Adminstrative Assistant is a key member of our synagogue staff, responsible for front-office operations, communications support, lifecycle, and general administrative tasks.  This position requires professionalism, strong communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a dynamic environment.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for congregants and visitors via phone, email, and in person.
  • Provide administrative support to the Executive Director and clergy, including scheduling and preparing materials for services and lifecycle events.
  • Maintain office organization, files, supplies, and general administrative systems.
  • Support synagogue programs, events, and holidays by coordinating logistics and administration.
  • Update member records and assist with data entry in membership software (e.g., ShulCloud)
  • Provide basic financial tasks, including invoices, check requests, and expense tracking.
  • Assist committees and volunteers as needed

Qualification

  • Prior Adminstrative or office experience required (nonprofit or synagogue experience a plus).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Experience with CRM or database systems preferred.
  • Professionalism, discretion, and respect for confidentiality.
  • Willingness to learn synagogue customs and traditions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Schedule & Compensation

  • Part-time position on-site
  • Occasional evenings or weekend hours may be required for programs and events.
  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience
