ABOUT CONGREGATION EMANU-EL
At Congregation Emanu-El, we believe that Judaism guides us on our journey to be better people, create stronger community, and repair the world. Emanu-El is the fifth largest Jewish Reform congregation in the United States, with 1900 households, and is the oldest Jewish congregation west of the Mississippi. Officially established in 1850, and located in a landmark temple in San Francisco, Emanu-El serves as a foundation of community life for Jews and non-Jews, for members and non-members, with innovative programs in worship, community, education, social justice, and Israel that span the cycles and events of life. In 2025, after an extensive capital project to revitalize our historic building and to expand our ability to meet the strategic goal of being a welcoming and accessible home to all Jews throughout the Bay Area, we will be reopening our doors and expanding our programs to serve the evolving needs of our Jewish community. As members of the Union for Reform Judaism, our commitment to a strong, vibrant, Jewish and democratic state of Israel, secure within its borders, is unyielding.
Summary
The Digital & Social Media Specialist supports the Communications department in executing the organization’s visual storytelling, digital content, and social media strategy. This role is evenly split between social media strategy and execution and media production in support of the organization’s ongoing communications workload, projects, and campaigns.
The Specialist is responsible for creating and capturing high-quality digital and print assets, including photography and video, that bring programs, worship, events, and the building experience to life across platforms.
Working across departments, the Specialist ensures that all materials produced — including graphics, video, social content, and signage — are cohesive, visually compelling, and aligned with Emanu-El’s tone and brand voice. The role plays a key part in maintaining a consistent and engaging presence across digital, print, and in-building communications, while leading and growing the organization’s social media channels and digital reach.
Key Responsibilities
Visual Content & Digital Media Production
- Co-create signage and interactive materials, both print and digital, for use throughout the building in support of programs, rentals, meetings, and events
- Design and produce digital graphics and multimedia assets, including:
- Newsletter banner graphics
- Digital wayfinding signage for events and multi-use spaces
- Digital signage content for screens throughout the building
- Support and execute video production, including:
- Editing sermons and worship recordings
- Producing High Holy Day materials
- Creating invitational and promotional videos for programs and community initiatives
Social Media Strategy & Execution
- Lead the rollout and ongoing execution of Emanu-El’s social media strategy, leveraging subject matter expertise in social media marketing (particularly Facebook and Instagram) to drive audience growth, engagement, and visibility across platforms.
- Develop and execute a content strategy that balances:
- Jewish cultural content (holiday recognition, sermon highlights)
- Video content that elevates clergy and the institutional voice, platforming the Senior Rabbi and the clergy team at large as personalities in the American Jewish world.
- Support both organic growth and paid campaigns, using platform trends and analytics to inform strategy
- Help position Emanu-El’s digital presence as dynamic, relevant, and engaging within the broader community
Print & Publication Support
- Assist in the design and production of large-scale print projects, including the Emanu-El Chronicle, in partnership with the broader Communications team
- Support layout, formatting, and visual consistency across print materials
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with the Director of Art & Communications and Communications team to execute organization-wide priorities and campaigns.
- Collaborate with program, events, and education teams to translate initiatives into effective visual and digital content
- Engage professionally with clergy and other public-facing leaders, supporting content creation that reflects their voice and presence
General Responsibilities:
- This is an at-will position. Thus, all employees are required to perform all other duties and tasks as assigned, including substituting for colleagues during absences.
- Participate in events and services operated by the organization, including those on religious holidays.
- Work cooperatively and professionally with all employees and members.
- Adhere to and fully follow all policies and legal requirements relevant to your duties.

- Experience in social media management, including content planning, platform trends, and paid campaign execution
- Strong visual design sensibility and attention to detail
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively across teams and with public-facing leaders
- Ability to be highly flexible with receiving and executing multiple media production projects at once, adhering to organization style as directed by and in partnership with the Director of Art and Communications
- Ability to manage multiple projects and timelines in a fast-paced environment
Additional Preferred Skills
- Copywriting skills for captions, campaigns, and digital content
- Working knowledge of HTML/CSS
- Experience with website platforms such as WordPress or Wix
