Cantor, Part-time
Shaare Tefila Congregation of Olney Maryland is a warm, engaging, inclusive Conservative Jewish community dedicated to meaningful worship, lifelong learning, and communal connection. We value tradition alongside thoughtful evolution and seek a part-time cantor who will be a spiritual leader, teacher, and collaborative partner.
Candidate Responsibilities: (Core)- Lead Shabbat, Festival services and High Holiday services- Lead Simchat Torah and Purim Evening services- Overseeing Preparation and or teach and prepare b’nai mitzvah students in Torah, Haftarah, prayers, and chanting
Additional tasks may include:- Teach music and prayer to religious school students- Cover for the rabbi when needed to perform Life Cycle events- Direct the volunteer adult (congregational) High Holiday choir
The successful candidate will exhibit the following skills:- Collaboration with current clergy and staff- Knowledge of Conservative traditional liturgy “nusach” (melodies of all services)- The ability to incorporate modern Jewish music (e.g. Carlebach, Shira Chadasha, etc.) into the service- Experience working with congregants of diverse ages and backgrounds- Self-starter, organized and consistent with follow-through- Can lead the congregation in spirited “davenning” - Ordination or certification from the Cantors Assembly or relevant experience- Excellent musical, vocal, and teaching skills- Personal, approachable, and community-oriented- Commitment to Conservative Jewish values and halakhic framework
Compensation: This is a part-time position with a salary package between $30,000 and $40,000, range commensurate with experience and agreed upon specifics of responsibilities via engagement agreement.
