As identified in Southern Arizona Jewish Community Pathways to Enriching Jewish Life and in the most recent Tucson J strategic plan, our community wishes to elevate and embrace diverse and innovative approaches to Jewish life. We will do this by creating an easily accessible, welcoming, and vibrant environment through establishing micro-community platforms and networks, with links to a wide variety of diverse offerings such as social justice, spirituality, the arts, environment, etc.); community-wide Jewish celebrations; and, curated spiritual and cultural experiences for affinity groups across the generational spectrum. In addition to enhancing the Jewish lives of those currently engaged, the community also is committed to attracting those who are unaffiliated and/or disengaged to a rich and meaningful Jewish practice or journey, in whatever form that may take for them.


This position is housed at the Tucson J, the town square of Jewish life in Tucson and Southern Arizona and reports to the Tucson J’s Director of Jewish Life and Learning. Guided by values rooted in Jewish tradition, the Tucson J is open to all people of all ages and all abilities. Everyone belongs, while some may choose to formally join. While the position is housed at the Tucson J, this is a community engagement role, where programming and meeting may take place in our physical space or out in the community, beyond the walls of our facility. The J practices radical inclusivity and is a safe non-judgmental space for all. Our Southern Arizona Jewish community is incredibly diverse with Jewish families and individuals self-identifying as: “Just Jewish,” Not Jewish, Culturally Jewish/Secular/Humanist, Jewish by Birth, Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, multi-faith, Israeli American, Jews of Color, LGBTQ, single-parent, differently abled/special needs, low-income, middle-income, and affluent. The J welcomes the participation of self-identifying Jewish families of all backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities.


The Director of Community Engagement alongside the other members of the engagement team and in close collaboration with the leadership and membership of the Jewish Ecosystem in Southern Arizona will work towards the goals of:


  • Building greater Jewish community through engagement work with Jewish organizations
  • Creating more opportunities for participation in vibrant Jewish life
  • Creating intentional and measurable Jewish engagement outcomes


Position Summary

We are searching for a dynamic individual to be the face of our community’s engagement work who will serve as the inaugural Director of Community Engagement. This individual is knowledgeable about Jewish practices and resources and will connect Southern Arizonans with one another and with local and on-line resources. The Director of Community Engagement will foster meaningful Jewish journeys and help Jews of Southern Arizona to find their place in the Jewish community, meeting them at their individual entry points. This leadership position will direct the engagement work emerging from the collaborative efforts of the Ecosystem, including pilot projects such as the newly established Relationship Based Engagement Initiative that serves to elevate and embrace diverse and innovative community-based approaches to Jewish Life.


Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Foster and incubate micro-communities by affinity groups and interest
  • Serve as the primary staff member in driving the cross-agency ecosystem initiatives forward
  • Build connections between and among Jewish organizations and individuals looking for elevated or alternative approaches to Jewish life and connect them with resources to further their Jewish journeys
  • Be a strategic thought-partner in advancing the community’s engagement initiatives
  • Work collaboratively with engagement team members at the J and across the Jewish community
  • Identify and train a cohort of community weavers (volunteers) and Jewish organizations to assist in building and supporting micro communities
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of an online platform for participant engagement through communication and information exchange
  • Foster collaboration among synagogues and Jewish agencies and coordinate community-wide Jewish events
  • Create an evaluation plan, track engagement metrics, and develop quarterly reports to share with the Ecosystem Leadership Team and membership
  • Promote and support programs, activities, and other engagement opportunities throughout the community in collaboration with Jewish organizations
  • Identify (and where there are gaps, create) diverse engagement opportunities for those interested in furthering their Jewish connection
  • Meet with individuals and families to build relationships and serve as a connector between people, programs, and initiatives
  • Speak at and participate in community events and activities
  • Work in collaboration with the development and communications staff at both JPSA and the Tucson J to further the goals of the initiative
  • Oversee the disbursement of an engagement budget, including support for community-wide events and micro grant engagement opportunities
  • Work collaboratively with other JCC departments and attend all relevant JCC staff team meetings
  • Other duties as assigned


Ideal Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree or combination of education and experience
  • 5+ years of related community relations experience, including managing community engagement and outreach programs
  • 3+years supervisory experience
  • Familiarity with Jewish lifecycle events and an appreciation for the importance of Jewish communal life, Jewish organizations, and trends in Jewish life
  • Effective written and oral communication skills for diverse community interactions, public speaking, workshops, publications, and public relations
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask and prioritize work
  • Experience working on complex and cross agency projects, and ability to make sound decisions with evolving information
  • Demonstrated ability to design and facilitate meetings, events, and collaborative processes engaging diverse stakeholders for continued community growth
  • Demonstrated competence with Microsoft Office, and on-line surveying tools
  • Facility for technology and social media, as well as excitement about its potential as a tool of engagement
  • Creative, self-motivated, and energized by interpersonal interactions
  • An able project manager, competent in breaking down and implementing project steps 
  • Able to build meaningful and trusting relationships with inter-organizational partners and internal colleagues
  • A team player, supporting the work of others, and being accountable to colleagues
  • A quick study who can use data to understand and translate complex information
  • Understanding of and commitment to the initiatives’ intended outcomes
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends
  • Access to reliable transportation
