Compensation: Starting at $60,000 annually, with flexibility upward commensurate with experience.

About the Congregation

Joliet Jewish Congregation is an unaffiliated synagogue serving approximately 60 member families. We are a welcoming and inclusive Jewish community dedicated to meaningful worship, lifelong Jewish learning, and strong communal connections.

Position Overview

Joliet Jewish Congregation seeks a knowledgeable, compassionate, and engaged Rabbi to serve as the spiritual leader of our congregation. The Rabbi will guide religious life, lead worship, provide education, perform lifecycle events, and represent the congregation within the broader community while working collaboratively with lay leadership and congregational committees.

Key Responsibilities

Spiritual & Religious Leadership

  • Serve as the spiritual leader of the congregation.
  • Interpret and teach Jewish law, tradition, and values.
  • Lead and officiate all congregational religious services.
  • Perform all lifecycle events, including:
    • Baby namings
    • Bar/Bat Mitzvahs
    • Weddings
    • Funerals
    • Conversions, as appropriate
  • Prepare students for Bar and Bat Mitzvah.
  • Recommend format or practice changes to congregational religious services to the Religious Observance Committee.

Religious Education

  • Serve as Director of Religious Education.
  • Work with the Education Committee to:
    • Develop religious education curriculum.
    • Ensure implementation of the approved curriculum.
  • Provide ongoing Jewish education to congregants of all ages; including Hebrew instruction.

Congregational & Administrative Leadership

  • Attend Board of Directors meetings without voting rights, unless requested to be excused.
  • Submit a monthly written report of rabbinic activities to the Board.
  • Direct and supervise congregational staff and employees related to religious and educational functions.
  • Report administrative or physical plant concerns to the Chair of the House Committee.
  • Perform additional duties as outlined in the written contract or as assigned by the Board from time to time.

Community Engagement

  • Represent Joliet Jewish Congregation in the surrounding community.
  • Build relationships with local organizations, interfaith groups, and community partners.

Membership Benefit

  • The Rabbi shall be a free honorary member of the congregation.
  • This benefit extends to the Rabbi’s immediate family residing in the same household.

Qualifications

  • Rabbinic ordination from a recognized Jewish program.
  • Experience leading worship services and lifecycle events.
  • Experience or strong interest in Jewish education.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with lay leadership and committees.
