Temple Beth Avodah, a vibrant Reform synagogue in Newton, MA, is seeking a 4th Grade Religious School and Hebrew Teacher to join our Religious School program for the 2026-2027 school year. This position is part of our dynamic Education Department, which supports an energetic, community-minded, and warm environment.
The ideal candidate will have experience working with children in educational or religious school settings, a strong background in Jewish culture, and proficiency in Hebrew language. We are looking for someone who brings energy, creativity, and care to their teaching, and who is passionate about fostering a joyful Jewish learning experience.
Candidates should demonstrate a strong work ethic, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to multitask in a lively environment. Comfort interacting with both children and adults is essential, along with a collaborative attitude and a deep respect for Jewish traditions and community life.
- Wednesdays: 3:15pm – 5:30pm
- Sundays: 9:15am – 11:30am
About the Program
Temple Beth Avodah’s Religious School program is focused on small group Hebrew learning and exploring Jewish values, holidays, and history through meaningful activities and discussions. On Wednesday’s we blend traditional Hebrew learning with games, play, and prayer as our 3rd through 5th grade students elevate their individual Hebrew skills. On Sunday’s our Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade students join us for by-grade instruction, building the foundational elements of their Jewish identities and fostering engagement in our larger synagogue community.
Position Overview
We are seeking a caring, energetic, and responsible individual to join our team as a teacher in our Religious School program, either on Wednesdays, Sundays, or on both days. This role requires in-classroom responsibilities, lesson planning and lesson execution, and supporting children’s social, emotional, and educational growth in a nurturing Jewish setting. Familiarity with special education tools and tactics a plus.
We are looking to fill (up to) two roles: one 4th Grade Sunday Religious School teacher and one Wednesday 4th grade Hebrew teacher. A qualified candidate is eligible to teach on both Sunday and Wednesday as one position. We will accept applicants who are only available to teach a single day.
Key Responsibilities
- School Support: Actively participate and model positive behavior in T’fillah with students, support students during transitions, and arrival and dismissal.
- Hebrew Instruction: Teach or assist in teaching a Hebrew language class using immersive and interactive methods.
- Jewish Educational Instruction: Teach or assist in teaching a Religious School class using immersive and interactive methods.
- Lesson Planning: Prepare and facilitate lesson plans each week.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with other educators and staff to create a positive and inclusive environment.
Compensation
Starting salary $50-$70/hour commensurate with experience.
